Ever had a broken rib?

Today I helped a guy I've known all my life move cattle. We were sorting them in the corrals and a 500-600 pound heffer wasn't cooperating very well. Long story short we got her on one side of the gate and instead of loading up into the trailer she ran right at the gate. There wasn't any chance of keeping her in. She was determined to get back to the other side. She ran right through it and the fence knocked me out of the way and hit the guy I was helping. The cattle panel hit him hard and he hit the ground hard. He's 67 years old so needless to say it scared me. I ran over to him and asked if he was alright and helped him up. About that time I look up and the heffer is running towards us. So I grabbed a spade handle up off the ground so I could bust her with it. About the time I went to swing she head butted me right in the side and threw me up in the air. I hit the ground plenty hard and got up mad and hurt. I couldn't breathe very well and I kept feeling like a rib was "clicking" every time I took a breath. Could I have broken one? I never have before so I don't know what its like if I did. At the time it wasn't funny and I got up cussin like a sailor but the guys that were there said I really flew pretty high. I'd laugh about it but....my ribs are too sore.

Yep sounds like a cracked rib. Is there heavy bruising? That's usually a big flag. I've had a couple cracked and it's no bueno my friend. Just about every movement and breath will hurt until it doesn't. Be careful out there.

I cracked a rib back in high school. There wasn't much the doctor could do. He had me wear some kind of a brace, but it didn't help much, so I never wore it. It was all quite painful for a while, but only hurt when I breathed. If yours is broken that might be a different deal. It may need to be set. You better get it checked out.

There's a little bruising so far but dadgum....I feel like I'm bruised internally. It hurts clear into my back. I feel like I got ran over by a car to be honest. It does hurt to breath so maybe I did. All I know for sure is my dreams of becoming a rodeo clown are over.....lol

No help on the rib problem but it sure sound like that heffer would make some good steaks!

It takes a while for ribs to stop hurting after an injury, it'll seem like you're never going to get better then one day it just stops hurting.

You got that right! Totally agree. Those guys were scared I was hurt bad until I hopped up on the fence and that crazy thing was still after me. They kept hollerin at me "Are you okay?" I pointed my finger at that heffers head and went "Bang!" and spit some chew on her. I ain't gonna say what else I said but those guys knew I was okay and got a laugh out of it.lol That's a bad feelin. Being hurt and mad all at the same time. Mad but too hurt to do anything about it. If that was my cow....her name would be Heinz 57.

Had em broke, cracked, and bruised. Hurts like @;&/). Last time I did I fractured 3 right where they attach at the back. I sneezed the next morning and holy crap I nearly passed out

a big ace bandage wrapped tight around the ribs helps and is about all you can do.

I feel your pain! Out of all the bones I have broke which is more than fingers and toes together I hate to say ribs seem to take the longest to heal! I would at least take the time to go see a Dr. I know this is a crazy question but do you have shortness of breath??? Of coarse you think "ya my rib is broke" that's what I thought and where my rib broke it mad a small cut in a artery and ended up collapsing my lung! Long story short go see a Dr.

I'll add this, I'm not sure if mine was broken, cracked, or just bruised, but 5 years later it will still hurt every once in a while.

Definitely should get it checked out by someone with letters after their name. Ribs hurt bad, but internal injuries sometimes go with them. That can be dangerous.

Yep. See a doctor to make sure you don't have internal injuries and they will likely give you a compression wrap. Most hurt I ever felt, and don't watch any comedy specials for a while!
