Another example of poor store planning

I read on here early last week about the sale that Atwoods was having on corn. So I go by there at lunch last Thursday to the one in Nacogdoches and of course they were out. I asked one of the girls working there about it and she said they were expecting more in at anytime. Flash forward to today and I go in and they still don't have any and the sale ends today. The little girl at the register said they had a bunch ordered but it didn't come in- they had been out for three days and had lost a lot of business because they didn't have any. Makes you wonder if they did this on purpose or just so incompetent they didn't realize what the demand might be. Since they didn't offer rain checks it makes me think that they had already decided how much they would get in and when they ran out that would be it. Real irritating!

It's not uncommon for a company to set a threshold on quantity for sale items. Every one they sale at that price is margin out of their pockets.

Might not be poor planning at all. Might be very much strategic.

Did they offer a "rain check" ?

Forecasting can be a tough job...especially for a newly established business with no history of sales. I'd expect them to offer a rain check but most likely they would get a pass from me.

No one can forecast corn sales accuratly...with the amount of storage space a store has on hand and the variables such as people picking up couple bags each throughout the week...to a truck that shows up and takes a couple pallets. It's a dousy.

THey usually just put it on sale to get rid of old inventory.

The reason they were out is because of the online rebate. With rebate came out to 3.99/bag limit 10

It was in the Attwoods flyer I got last week. I think people jump all over $4 corn. I don't think it's Attwoods fault they ran out. Blame those greedy people around tyler

I know the rebate was probably why they would run out, but do they not have marketing people in these chain stores that look into the market they are in, the time of year, and anticipate a large turnover? My God, they are in east Texas, roughly two weeks away from probably the biggest weekend (other than opening day) for deer hunters and they don't think they can move corn? If space is a problem, and at this Atwoods I really don't think it would be, have it delivered every two days.

How do you know it wasn't the fault of the suppliers? Imagine if they got so overwhelmed because all the Atwoods put corn on sale at the same time, that they just couldn't deliver it fast enough.

Logistics is a fickle lady sometimes.

Back in high school I used to work at K-Mart. I cringed every single weekend b/c I knew that a lot of the sale items that came out in the weekly flyer hadn't/wouldn't come in and I was always preparing for the verbal beatings from customers. I swear it was a corporate scheme just to get customers in the store...

Russ79- Google the term "loss leader" and you'll have the answer. The fact that they didn't offer rain checks on the corn confirms that this is exactly what the low priced corn was intended to be.

Exactly, I remember folks buying it by the pallet when the price went low like that. It didn't take long for it to be gone. Saw one guy buy 4 pallets, had his trailer with him.
