I am going to plant a couple of food plots, I have the tractor and attachments to do it, I just have never done it. What time of year do yall plant talks food plots and any recommendations on what to plant?

You need to start off with a soil test for about 10 bucks. Find out what you ph is like and get fertilizer recommendations for the intended crop. Some people plant on labor day. It can make you look like a hero or a zero depending on rain fall. Ithink it is best to waint until closer to the end of sept or first part of oct.

Everything nova said! You will probably have to lime also. That won't help this year but will for future years. Also #1 thing people do wrong is bury the seed too deep. Get it disced well, seed/fertilize and use a hog panel behind a 4 wheeler. This will ensure you don't bury it too deep.

            I'm in Franklin county.

Plant winter wheat (VNS), turnips and red clover.

Last year, planted the above with peas and chicory. The peas didn't grow.

Gonna go more simple this year. The deer really didn't hammer the plot like I had hoped...too much forage.

I think I planted around the end of Sept when it started raining. Mowed, then gly'ed. A week or two later, I planted. Had sust as much success with not tilling and just broadcasting the seed. This year, I may disk, last year I used the scarifiers on my box blade. May try disking this year, results seem to be the same with or without.

If your lazy like me, you can buy seed locally and they will usually know what you need for your soil.

Go to the QDMA website. There is a wealth of info there. Seed in your area ( mine too ) can be bought at East Texas Seed in Tyler or possibly better seeds ( less weed count ) can be bought online at grandparaysoutdoors.com. Hancock Seeds, or Deer Creek seeds. The seed companies that cater to food plotters generally have the most weed free seeds. I have gotten some from feed stores in the past that gave me some weeds that are not native and are hard to get rid of. Good luck !

Man I hope you have better luck than me. I have planted stuff for last 5 years and the deer ignore it

Still planning on planting again this fall. Oats, winter peas and turnips. Waiting for a little moisture before I plant. Could be Oct before I plant based on rain
