You need to start off with a soil test for about 10 bucks. Find out what you ph is like and get fertilizer recommendations for the intended crop. Some people plant on labor day. It can make you look like a hero or a zero depending on rain fall. Ithink it is best to waint until closer to the end of sept or first part of oct.

Plant winter wheat (VNS), turnips and red clover.
Last year, planted the above with peas and chicory. The peas didn't grow.
Gonna go more simple this year. The deer really didn't hammer the plot like I had hoped...too much forage.
I think I planted around the end of Sept when it started raining. Mowed, then gly'ed. A week or two later, I planted. Had sust as much success with not tilling and just broadcasting the seed. This year, I may disk, last year I used the scarifiers on my box blade. May try disking this year, results seem to be the same with or without.
If your lazy like me, you can buy seed locally and they will usually know what you need for your soil.
