It was obviously some sort of gang initiation sting.

Too bad we can't post the "this is a wasp" meme 'cause this thread is perfect for it.

I have my wasp spray at the front door. I have killed 3 or more every day for a week. Sprayed Home Defense where they normally hang out and don't get to kill any with the wasp spray :/ It took the fun away...

I got hit by one about 6 years ago. We were doing a lot of dirt work around a house with a back hoe. I had squatted down to look at the drive way and I swear some one hit me with a hammer in the knee.....!!!!!!! I literally yelled out loud SOB.....and looked around to see who hit me..!!!!! I looked down at my pant leg and one those flying pterodactyls was hanging off my overalls by his BUTT.... I swatted him off and squished him till I felt better....Then went and sat down in the truck to look at my knee and maybe cry a little.. Sorry you got hit in the neck brother... death to all flying/stinging insects...!!!

Its funny that you compared it to a red hot ice pick. I was raking up one day and grabbed a red wasp nest in the bushes and they lit me up good all over my hands. Funny thing is, I kept seeing the neighbor kid around with his BB rifle and I had BBs in my yard. I first assumed that little ******* had lit me up. Didnt take long to realize what was really happening and I ran faster than I probably ever have before.

Everything Ive heard/read about these critters is that they are not aggressive towards humans. BUT, this time last year I had another one attack me for no good reason. The only thing I had handy was Simple Green in a squirt bottle but that did him in. Dont know what the deal is - maybe I resemble a giant gray headed cicada to them
Same thing happen to me. I have been stung by all sorts of wasps and bees, but that was the worst.

I had one of those sting me between the fingers one time getting in my ground blind in the dark a couple of years ago. I was with my son and pushed him about five feet back from me to keep him from getting stung.

There were a couple of others in there so I had to get them out. I took my wedding ring off before my hand swelled. Put a no pest strip in the blind on the next trip and never had another problem after that.

Different beast alltogether! A cicada killer looks like the one in the OP.

                    Here is a tarantula hawk:

Really? Always thought they were one in the same. Thanks for that.
