I was redoing my porch and noticed drag marks and something moving in my fresh dug up earth from the day before. I waited for movement agsin and chopped it in half with a shovel. Ihad to look it up to see what it was. They are huge and mean looking.i am glad i wasnt stung.it must be the time of year for them.

We had these twice over the last 19 years in our garden.

They create a hole in ground and snatch the cicadas up and take them under the ground.

        They are scaring sounding.

        Glad u r ok

I would agree. Had a red wasp attack me twice in E. Texas last year defending it's shed. They are talking to each other.

We see these all the time around our deck, but luckily, they haven't tried to sting anybody. They look deadly

It seems like those bastages always go for the head. Oh my how many times have I been stung there.

Sounds like you got off lucky with your sting.

Joining the bullet ant at four is a critter that lives right here in the southwestern US: the tarantula hawk. It’s actually a kind of solitary wasp with a sting whose resulting pain only lasts three minutes, but it’s so fiercely electric that it could only be described as totally unacceptable. “There are some vivid descriptions of people getting stung by these things,” says invertebrate biologist Ben Hutchins of Texas Parks and Wildlife, “and their recommendation—and this was actually in a peer-reviewed journal—was to just lie down and start screaming, because few if any people could maintain verbal and physical coordination after getting stung by one of these things. You’re likely to just run off and hurt yourself. So just lie down and start yelling.”

Craziest thing with bees. We went to the lease this weekend to do some work and got up at about 5:30 to beat the heat. I guess from the light in the camper there were hundreds of bees gathered on the door. Practically covering the window... My buddy opened it and it sounded like a freakin tornado! 10 or so came in and he shut the door. We turned the light off and they disappeared. Weird deal for sure, I though we were done for a sec! Killer Bees on attack!

Wasps are just demons incarnate. Can't stand em. I flinch if I see one come at me. Nothing makes me smile more than hitting a nest with spray and watching them die a miserable death on the ground.

The heat has got them all ticked off.....I've had several non aggressive flying bugs start coming at me more lately.

Red wasps are bad this year. The sit on the bricks under the front porch and wait for someone to walk out. They are possessed I think! No nest, they just sit around waiting for some unsuspecting person to nail.

Wow! Great description of the attack. Sounds just like what 1369 quoted from the scientific article above. Glad you killed it.

That is a Ground Hornet and they will attack you with a vengeance and chase you if you disturb them or there nest.
