Not a matter to be taken lightly. The infectious agent (prions) can live in the soil for years, so killing off all the herd won't necessarily stop it, but slow it some. I hate to say it, but we won't see the end of the problem in our lifetimes.

Reaction of breeder/sellers? Predictable--"Since chronic wasting disease appeared in Medina County, the state has banned most breeders from moving their captive deer around the state. But the vast majority of breeders — most of whom raise their animals to sell to ranchers ahead of hunting season — are hoping state officials soon lift the ban and allow them to transport deer before Sept. 22, or they won’t be able to sell the trophy bucks they have bred.

Whatever happened to hunting a deer running wild?? And please don't give me that "I'm fencing out bad neighbors" crap. If there were that many poachers we would no native deer...

Hope this thread stays current, be interested to see what comes of it. I work for a company who may be in the beginning stages of high fence deer management herd. This could really change the ballgame.

Saw that too...without a return on the investment(turning out and shooting the bought bucks) some places stand to really take a hit this season.

I'm not sure I see TPWD having an answer by the 22nd.

Put and take whitetail places may be up a creek this hunting season. Prices should shoot up for what is available. I guess they could always just shoot them out of the pens and not move them.
