In all honesty that should be his terms. Maybe you should ask him?

edit: If you make this a tricky "cattle business deal" it's only going to turn into more of a headache. Keep it simple... treat the loan as a loan and settle upon terms that you are both comfortable with if possible. In the end, the ball is in his court. Good luck

Split the cost of medical/hay/feed based on how many head each of you have.

What ever you decide to do, get every detail down on paper.

I agree with this, it sounds like you're fairly comfortable with the rest of the setup. If you can agree on the terms of reimbursement it sounds like you have the knowledge for the rest of it. Good Luck

I guess I am confused how this is going to benefit the land owner/backer.

Sounds like you would be grazing his land for free and ultimately getting a few head of cattle for your labor in the deal.

I guess I do not come in contact with the right people who would be willing to give me 25-30k to buy 10-15 head of momma cows plus let me graze his property as well.

I would Ask this said person what he expects. Who is going to pay for up keep of fence, vet bills, ear tags, medicines, feed and transportation? What is the end product you are trying to sell stocker calves, replacement heifers and bulls? Who owns the bull?

Lots of ifs and buts in this deal right now

He also has cows that we will be taking care of, thats his end of the deal, plus whatever he gets out of those comes when it comes time to sell

I would trade labor for grazing straight across. Then when it was time to sell I would pay a set amount on the principal that he loaned you until the cattle were payed off. I would have it all in a legal contract to keep yourself from getting the bad end of a deal that might go south.

I guess you really need to be asking him these questions. I bet he has something in mind and no need to beat around the bush about it..... Probably a little higher interest than the bank and probably get 2/3rds to all of sale proceeds until you pay him back....

Just go sit down and ask the man how he wants it to work...

I can think of a few 'details' that haven't been talked about yet. First, you want to buy 'mama' cows. Have they been bred? If not, then you won't have any income for the first year (no calves to sell) and since you will have to raise them for about 6 months before you take them to market, you'll be well into your 2nd year of the loan. Second, say you get real lucky and pay off the 'loan' in 3 or 4 years. What happens then? Will he let you continue to graze your cattle on his land? What happens if before you get the loan paid off he decides that there are too many head on his pasture? Now your stuck with a bunch of cows and no place to put them. Don't just think about 'getting started', think about further down the road. But i want to wish you 'good luck'. If you can get it to work, it sounds like it will be a great ride.

pretty simple math for the most part. How many Acres total, How many cows total, how many of the cows are yours?

I say put your cattle on your own place.

My old man fronted me money to get mine started. All we did was when the calves went to the sale it was his check until it was all paid off. Worked out well for us. I would work all the cows and he got us most of the pastures.

I can't wait till I can carry 10-15 calves to market next year. Right now I'll have 3 this year. Plan on putting them into more head of cattle.

Even crappy calves are bringing high dollars. Trying to convince my Dad to pick up a few Longhorns to breed. Put on some acreage that needs cleaning. Instant money.
