Dogs in crates in truck bed question

I'm curious what the gs opinion is. I just got a truck a few months back and now keep my dog in a crate when I travel instead of inside like I use to with my Tahoe. My trips are typically about 3 hours long. Usually I don't worry about it but with this summer heat it's got me thinking. What do yall think about the heat and dogs in the crate? Do you make many stops to give them water? Is there something I should do to keep her cool? Or should I just not worry about it?

I freeze old orange juice bottles full of water and throw one or 2 in the kennel with my dog during the summer.

Castandblast- that sounds like a good way. Will give it a try

The general- yes sir, about to head out. Have a safe drive in and get ready for a great weekend.

Normally I don't worry about it, the wind is enough to know the heat back. But during the misery that was the summer of 2011 I made a 4 hr trip in 105+ temps and I put frozen water bottles back with both dogs. They made it just fine.

Knowing how you get sometimes, I think this may be the best option...

That is so cruel. Why not put the crate inside the truck? I probably should, but I never use a crate. She always rides shotgun. That seat is full of hair and dirt.

My first dog did! Then I went to sell my truck, when cleaning it, I found dog hair in places that seemed impossible. At that moment, I said never again

Bailey use to ride where ever she wanted in the Tahoe but once I got the truck I said no more to hair everywhere. Occasional she does get to ride in the cab. Hunting trips though she's in the back. This trip today we got two dogs. Not my truck so bailey is in the back, while his dog is in the cab.

Great Idea! My brats ride in the cab 99% of the time, but I will remember this one.

I put a king size blanket over my backseat, then put one of those dog pads that isn't big enough to cover a full size truck seat on top. It holds the blanket in place really well. Once a week I roll them both up and wash them. I have never had a problem with dog hair in my truck.

My lab rides in a crate in the bed. He wouldn't have it any other way. He chooses the crate too. I had him in the cab when he was a pup and he sat on the backseat looking out the back window at his crate. When we would stop he'd jump out and run to the back and try to find a way into the bed.

Get a lazer temp gun and monitor the temp.

We have several but all of ours are metal and have an empty storage box on top.
In really hot weather I throw bags of ice in the top

Cajun, What kind of truck is it? If its a Ford, fold the seats up and fold the "tool rack" out that is under the seat. Go to Hope Depot and get a "fatigue mat" that you're supposed to put by a work bench or something and put it over the rack so the pup doesn't slid around. Put a doggy bed back there and they will never wake up. I bring my German Shepherd to work every day, and this is how she rides.
