What kind of protein did you use? Did you try mixing it with corn at first? It can take a while to get used to protein. Or you might have not made the feeders water proof so protein got wet and then they wouldnt eat it. Roasted soybeans will give you added nutrition in a spin feeder.
Mixing with corn would have been a good idea. I just went to the feed store and bought their cheapest protein feed.
As much rain and greenery as we have, feeding anything right now would be useless. We have sunflowers that approaching 10' tall and the weeds, forbs and grass on our place are so thick and tall, if you get off your 4 wheeler, you better flag it as you may not be able to find it again! I have been in this area pushing 10 years and have never seen our pastures like this. If it does not dry up and stays like this during the season, we may have great horns, but they will not have to move or come to feeders and it may be a long season unless we get lucky.
I bought a bag of Insights Nutrition last week for 21 lb. bag for $15.00. I will not be buying much of that. I will stick with corn. The sweet feed sounds good but probably too expensive as well.
I would mix a little bit of corn with protein a free choice. As stated above, there is plenty for the deer to eat but I would at least be trying to get them used to the taste of protein. That way you can pick up feeding straight protein in February.
Roasted soybeans and corn mixture was called horn korn where we hunted, deer loved it but alot more expensive, but depends on deer alot of folks say there deer won't eat it
We are feeding corn/soybean mix, protein pellets, alfalfa and cottonseed. The deer are absolutely hammering all of it. Excited to see some horns this year.

Wow a freakin smorgasbord buffet! Your deer must be pretty happy.

I would not mix corn in with the protein. I had a bad experience doing this because as mentioned above it can take a while for the deer to get started on protein. What happened was I had the 1200 lb Boss Buck feeder loaded up protein and mixed corn in with it and by game camera they started eating it but slowly. Well weevils got in there like crazy eating the corn (they did not eat the protein) and the deer would not eat out of it period weevils were all in it. I had to dump the whole bin of feed, probably 1000 lbs and let the hogs eat it all up then refill it with just protein.
Also once you get them eating a certain brand (Record Rack or Antler Max etc) do not switch or the deer will not eat it. You will have to retrain them again maybe not always but they may not like your new brand and it just sits there.
As you state above, corn is not a source of nutritional value compared to protein or natural food sources. It is actually worse because they will fill up with corn every day at 8% protein and not eat natural vegetation at 16 - 30% protein. It is an attractant food source.
The Record Rack Golden Nuggets will work for you out of a spin feeder. I would go with a protein feeder if you really want to add to the supplement feeding of your deer.
