    Deer feed other than corn?

I have been reading about how corn does not offer deer much of anything when it comes to nutrition.

My question is, is there something that will work in a spin feeder and can be bought easily that provides strong nutrition for deer?

I tried feeding protein last year and the deer did not seem to take to it. I built protein feeders and a lot of the feed just rotted.

This year I have planted wheat and just left the corn feeders up.

I tried a blend of corn and soy beans. Works fine in a spin cast feeder and offers a little more protein. It's about $1 a bag more than plain corn. I quit using it though just because I see the feeder as an attractant and not really a significant source of nutrition. Corn is like candy while forbes are the main source of nutrition unless you can get them to eat your protein.

Nothing attracts them like corn, nothing.

What kind of protein did you use? Did you try mixing it with corn at first? It can take a while to get used to protein. Or you might have not made the feeders water proof so protein got wet and then they wouldnt eat it. Roasted soybeans will give you added nutrition in a spin feeder.

In the spin feeders we use in Edwards county, we throw a combo of protein, corn, peas and milo. When you go look on the ground, there is some milo occasionally if the turkeys haven't been there yet, but everything else is always eaten. Mineral and salt blocks as well. Granted we do have several species of exotics that feed there as well and have different 'appetites' than whitetail.

I spun a protien pellet/corn mix that the deer loved, I think it's called Angelo Pellets.

But in the end they were there for the corn, IMHO.

I've always thought a cheap textured goat/livestock sweet feed would work. Smells sweet and has a little more than corn. I've never tried it. Just a thought.

I put 50lbs. corn and 50lbs. of horse sweet feed in mine. Have to adjust the feeder so it will sling it. Deer love it.

Nothin works better than yella corn. If you wanna provide more nutrition buy/make a gravity flow feeder and get a protein that they'll eat. Starting off mixing it with corn helps a lot. I used to buy a corn/protein/split pea mix at Bode's in Harper. The deer will flat nail his protein pellets by themselves tho. They have a flavor enhancer.
