Apparently the 2011 year model was something of a lemon, and guess which year model I have? Every person I know that has issues with their Ranger turns out it is a 2011. I know of one guy that traded his 2011 for a newer model. The problems that I have had to deal with is what I will call vapor locking (run good but shut it off and try to start it back up and it won't- let it sit a while and it will) and overheating. I have had it in twice for overheating and right now it seems that every time I go thru water and splash some up on the engine I get overheating problems- temperature jumping way up and dying even though I know it isn't hot. If I knew how to get ahold of someone in the Polaris corporation I would lay a few MF's on them. And what sadistic b@@@@@@ put the oil filter where they did?

I've never heard that but it all makes sense. We have a 2011 and have those same problems. Especially the overheating problem and the same thing happens when water gets on it that you mentioned.

          russ,

my neighbor is the lead mechanic at family power sports in san angelo. I turned to him when I was looking to buy a new vehicle. he said to that he gets 5x the amount of rangers in for service than he does any other vehicles.... he pointed me to the mule, and I trust him. my teryx4 did me well, but I needed more cargo capacity, and he said the new mule is solid as a rock. I have about 150 miles on mine now and it's been GREAT. go test drive the mule pro fxt and I guarantee you'll like it. I drove the ranger, the mule, and the new Yamaha all the same day. there was no comparison. the mule blew them away... comfortable, QUIET (like really quiet), suspension is like a pillow, and very versatile with the bed extending capability. I can carry 3 people + 1000 lbs in the bed, or slide it back and carry 6 people with 350 lbs in the bed.

The new john deer gator. We've had 9 rangers and now have 2 gators and one ranger. The gators have been great, then again so has the new ranger. Hopefully the kinks are worked out as the ranger is a superior machine in almost every other facet, minus the ride. The gator crew is smooooth

I will be the odd man out here. I bought a 2011 honda big red 700 4x4 and to date have 1900 miles on it with ZERO issues, it has never been to the shop other than for scheduled maintenance. I have pulled numerous rangers back to the truck with this buggy and it just keeps on going. Not knocking any of the others but if you can deal with the 42mph top speed the honda is a winner, comfortable, stong and reliable.

I don't know the exact sales numbers of each make, but I would almost guarantee that Polaris sells more than 5 times as many units as any other. So of course you would see more in for service.

My buddy just bought the new mule with independent suspension etc. I am very impressed with it and price is much cheaper than the Ranger. Doesn't have the speed of the Ranger but then again are you working it or racing it.

go with the honda-runs strong like any honda and so butt ugly that you'll never have to worry about it getting stolen.

If you treat them like the OP says they do, none of them will hold up. They are not made for that kind of abuse. I am a Polaris fan and have sitting in my garage right now a 2005 Sportsman 500 HO that I have not had any trouble with except one burned belt because I tried to pull a tree out of the brush that was too heavy.
I do the regular maintenance on them and they do fine. Abuse anything like that and they will cause you problems.
The beauty is you have a choice in what you buy so go to another brand and I hope it works out better for you.
