    Raised Garden

I've seen a lot of threads of people that do big gardens. Well I live in town and don't have space for a real big garden so we are going to try our hands at a raised bed. If it goes well the first few weeks and we don't kill anything then I will build another one.

Built the raised bed out of 6' ceder fence pickets and a rough cut cedar 2x4. Took about 15 minutes and that included cutting two pickets in half and cutting the 2x4 to length for the corners. Took about 14 bags of 1cu ft Miracle Grow garden soil I got on sale at lowes. 5 bags for $10. Planted a few of the tomato and bell pepper plants we bought.

These are some of the plants my daughter is trying to grow from seeds. So far they are doing really good. We have watermelon, cantaloupe, cucumber, peas, squash, and zucchini I believe.

My 7 year old is loving it. Even after taking her shower and getting ready for bed last night she wanted to come out and help carry the bags from the trailer to the garden bed. Then she helped level it out and digs to holes to plant.

Who else does raised beds for their garden? Thinking about trying to do the cucumbers and squash up some lattice. I will probably be stopping the the local McCoys to get some pallets to use as the lattice. Any tips or ideas from anyone who has done raised beds?

I have 5 beds on the side of my house. Carrots, potatoes, watermelon and strawberries are there right now. My kids love it too.

I have 8 4'x4' raised beds right now. If you square ft everything out you can calculate for your maximum yeilds each season. Got 6 different types of tomatoes, onions, garlic, peas, spinach, dewberry's,grapes and several other things in them currently. I did the 5 for $10 bags also. Hellava deal!

Did you turn the dirt under your bed? most plants need at least 18'' of root space.

I put weed guards on the bottom of mine. When roots bottom out they grow laterally.

Some thing to keep in mind, don't make the beds so wide that you can't reach every where you need to plant and harvest.

My daughter and I are in week three of our new 8x4 raised bed.

We are growing tomatoes, bell peppers, green beans, jalapeƱos and serranos. The cucumbers are apparently not going to report for duty.

My daughter enjoys checking progress every morning and managing the water distribution responsibilities.

We built ours of landscape timbers (4 high), but I think I prefer the cedar planks on this thread.

Not sure how much we will yield, but it's been a fun project so far.

the planks are super easy and I preferred the look over the timbers. I will probably be putting anothe. One in in a week or two.

Anyone grow lettuce? Anyone use a trellice for the cucumbers and squash?

After some research, I prefer cedar pickets over treated wood.

What would you prefer to use on a balcony for a apartment? Interested in starting my own, but afraid I don't have the space.

YouTube vertical gardening....there's lots of people who use 55 gallon drums and cut holes in the side for plants....looks pretty sweet and easy to do
