    I'm done with Goodwill

I stopped in to our local Goodwill donation center, Saturday, with two boxes of stuff. It was mostly clothes, one light fixture, and the rest just misc. stuff.

I'm in a hurry, so I told the attendant that I didn't need a donation receipt and handed over the first box. She started digging through the top layer and said, "oh, the ends of the wires on this light fixture show it's been used; we can't take this."

I asked her if they could just throw away what they couldn't use.

She just looked at me like I kicked her puppy.

She dug a little farther, as I was trying to head back to my truck, for the second box. She pulled out something else and said they couldn't take that either.

At that point, I said "I'll tell you what, I'll just take all of this and throw it in my trash at home."

I got the crazy eyes, again, as I loaded the box back into my truck.

I passed an un-manned clothes donation box, on the way home and dumped all the clothes in there. The rest of it went in my trash.

I take cloths to those boxes. Makes life easier.

    When did goodwill become picky?

Katy Christian ministries has done that to me a couple of times. Everything was in great condition. But they wanted to pick and choose what the needy needed. Just packed it up and trashed it.

Thank you for using the donation box Kevin. The smaller ministries that place them rely totally on folks like you that will continue to donate. They will take the appliances also, repair them if able, or discard if they can't.

For you guys in the Cleveland area, Covenant with Christ is located at the old Western Auto and they have a drop box near the back door. They utilize their funds helping ladies get back on their feet and she does prison ministry all over our area.

Taking stuff to Goodwill is a last resort. They turn around and sell the stuff. I take my stuff to Star of Hope Mission in Houston. For battered women and folks to get back on their feet. The folks are polite and do all the work.

Ours is the same way. They go through everything and give you back stuff that isn't perfect.

I had an oversized chair that was in really good condition. The only problem was that the zipper on one cushion wasn't working right. It was fully functional and the nonworking zipper wasn't visible. They told me they couldn't take it and made me take it. I told they I was just going to throw it away and they didn't care.

Now we give to the Center of Hope.

I do understand that no charity wants to be a drop off point for your trash, but I trash the trash, right away. I always try to find a use for something that still has some life in it, including clothes ... if I wouldn't wear them in public, I won't donate them.

We took them a lot of stuff, but I think they closed down; or at least the location that was off of Mason did.

The one in Mineola Texas is run like an upscale resale shop

You should see the prices on the stuff they have in there.

Not sure what difference it makes that a light fixture is used, rather take my chances with a used light fixture than a pair of used underwear

                    Goodwill is a Charity Racket

An American multi-national corporation, which accepts millions of dollars in government funds, pays its top executives more than half a million dollars per year in total compensation, while simultaneously paying some of its employees less than the federal minimum wage.

Some employees earn just 22 cents per hour.

And the entire racket is perfectly legal thanks to a Depression-era loophole in federal labor law. Is now a good time to mention that this corporation also doesn't pay any taxes?

"Goodwill Industries is one of the most well-known charitable organizations in the United States, but most members of the general public are unaware that Goodwill exploits people with disabilities," said Dr. Marc Maurer, President of the National Federation of the Blind, which has organized a nationwide protest of offending Goodwill organizations. "We are conducting informational protests to make the public aware of this practice that, although sadly still legal, is unfair, discriminatory, and immoral."

I donate lots of items to Tx Paralyzed Vets org, and to the local thrift shop run by the county family violence shelter. Yes, they re-sell things, but the monies go to support their programs.

Never suggest not donating to non-profits unless you understand how they work. If said "profits" are used towards funding their mission statement, then so be it. If not, then yes, don't donate. But don't make such a broad brush statement including all non-profits if you don't get it.

Btw, yes I run a non-profit and yes we've made "profits" off free items. I've even taken free cash from sponsors. God forbid!!!

This^^^^ I won't step foot in their stores. Salvation Army gets my unwanted items. They take everything.....sometimes with our without a smile. Hit or miss really on who you get that day.

Hospice Brazos Valley gets our unwanted items. They sell them and use the money to provide hospice services. I refuse to give anything to "Good" Will.
