I believe its those little red hairs that help to tell which is which. Both have thorns but the dewberry has the red hairs..

I looked it up and it seems that it depends on what part of the state you are in..as to when they are ripe....I also found out..with lots of rain they get ripe earlier....Ours generally get ripe in May....My wife keeps an eye out too.... I guess I'll have to help pick em....

We have a tree that drops similar looking berries. My dad got pretty sick. Not sure what they are.

Rode the golf cart out to the pond while I let the dogs out when I got home. Checked how the dewberries were coming along and looky here! A handful of deliciousness! I think I'll take a bucket out this weekend and pick some more. They're almost all ripe!

Lots of rain makes them bigger and more plump which causes lots of people to call them blackberries

Dewberries are ripening now. Blackberries (wild) are smaller, grow on taller bushes, and ripen several weeks later.

Mulberries are also ripening now. I have several trees and each will has a little bit different fruit maturation and size. They are perfectly fine to eat. My kids know every tree in this area and we eat them by the thousands every spring. Since the fruit is all sweet and no tart we make cobblers with half dewberries and half mulberries. Loquats also ripen at the same time and can be used in cobblers as well.

This is a young (3 year-old) mulberry that the kids keep picked pretty clean since it's only about 30' from the house.

This is a mature (15 year-old) loquat that is currently ripe, as well.

Watch for copperheads in those dewberry patches!
