Been lookin' at getting a new zero turn mower. I'm really interested in the Hustler Raptor SD 54". Anybody have one? If so, how do you like it? When comparing it to other mowers, I haven't seen anything g that offers what the Raptor SD does that's in the same price range. It seems like everything else that's similar is $1,000-$1,500 more. Thoughts? I'd like to stay at or below $4,000 price tag. But, I want the best bang for my buck.

IMHO look at Kubota or Scag. Heard good things on Gravely and DixieChopper too -
By the looks of that thread everybody except the OP has had great luck with them. And, it sounds like the problem he had was an isolated assembly issue and not a total quality problem. I've looked at the Gravleys and the Dixie Choppers. They are both nice but each of them costs well over $6,000, which about 50% more than I want g to spend. I'm looking for the upper end of the residential mowers, not a full blown commercial mower. If spending that kind of money were an option, we wouldn't be having this discussion. I'm looking to see if anyone knows of a better mower that is still in the $4,000 price range. I know that there are higher quality mowers out there, but this is for mowing my yard, not something to be run all day long 5 or 6 days a week.Originally posted by bowhunterchris View PostComment

I looked at one, but ended up upgrading to the big dog model. Also made by hustler.
4500 out the door. Better seat, wheels, tires and led lights, also had the engine guard.
It's a great mower.Comment

I have the hustler raptor SD and love it I mow around 4 acres at home, 2 at my grandma's, probably half acre at my moms, and half acre at the fire station no problems here just changed the blades (sandy soil) that's it I looked at the big dogs as well the warranty wasn't as great as the hustler and there was something else hustler was better on I can't remember I wasn't worried about headlights or engine guard (shouldn't be hitting stuff with the back of the mower anyway) and as far as the seat goes its comfortable for meComment

I also looked at the big dogs. At the time the comparable model to the SD was $800 more than the hustler for basically the same mower other than the seat stitching, lights, engine guard, and the color. I didnt need any of that. Also, the warranty on the hustler was much better than the big dogs!
Couldn't see enough difference in the gravelys to justify the extra $1500 and all the dealers around here are dropping Dixie chopper due to poor service and lack of warranty support from the mfgr. If I am spending that kind of money, I'm not buying from a big box store so all the other brands were out. SCAG and Kubota are awesome mowers but they were priced WAY out of my price range.
Bad boy mowers were getting very poor reviews on all the lawn care forums at the time so I passed on them too.
So far I've been very pleased with my SD. The only fault I've found with it is the discharge chute is a bit small. Not a problem for regular mowings but high wet grass can cause clogging if you don't prop the guard open a bit. I just tie a string to the chute and tie it open for the first mowing of the year. My yard is very low and wet during the spring and ilthe grass is usually 10-12" tall and thick. After the first mowing, I don't have to do that anymore and it mows great!Comment
