    Permethrin Cost Comparison $$

I've been buying Sawyer's Permethrin. It works great. I spray it on the clothes I wear to work around the land and it does a good job of keeping the bugs off of me. I know a lot of you use it too. But here's something I discovered this weekend...

    (Cost comparison using Amazon.com prices.)

    Sawyer Permethrin, 24 oz, 0.5% permethrin, $14.99

Ready to use, yields 24 oz. of 0.5% solution.

Cost: .62 per ounce of 0.5% permethrin

    Martin's Permethrin, 32 oz, 10.0% permethrin, $27.69

Mix 10% solution with 20 parts water to yield 640 oz. of 0.5% solution.

Cost: .04 per ounce of 0.5% permethrin

    Please check my math.

For that kind of savings, I can add my own water.

I haven't tried the Martin's product yet. It should be here today. Permethrin is just a chemical, so I can't really see how one brand would be any better than another. At this price, I plan to mix a couple gallons at a time in a five gallon bucket and fully submerge my work clothes in it rather than spray it on.

Does this stuff keep ticks and red bugs off of you?

Concentrate is always cheaper than RTU (ready to use) in any pesticide.

I love the cost per oz. analyzes on products now. If I could only get my wife to pay attention to it!

Its far cheaper to buy and dilute yourself. I spray it directly on my yard to get rid of chiggers and fleas and it works really well!

It works pretty good for ticks, chiggers and mosquitos. But you don't spray it on like conventional bug sprays because it's not supposed to come in contact with your skin while it's wet. You use it to treat your clothing and you don't wear that clothing until it's dry. It's supposed to last through five clothes washings, but I usually retreat after two or three washings.

Good to know. If I sprayed patios and surrounding brick with it, do you think it would keep the mosquitos away? Have you ever run it through a water hose sprayer?

I buy the 1.5 gallon 39% stuff and I can add my own water. But I wondered if there was something additional added to the spray for clothing. I don't see how normal stuff could last through several washing cycles??????

Arrived from Amazon well packaged with tape over both caps and in a ziplock bag. Not a drop leaked.

The bottle has a pour side and a measure side. The measure compartment is marked 1/2 oz and 1 oz on one side and 5ml, 15ml and 30ml on the other. Additionally, the side of the bottle is marked in 2 oz increments and 100 ml increments. All this should make mixing a snap.

Comes with pretty detailed instructions for use in a variety of applications, from hotels to home lawns to feed lots. Seems to control darn near every kind of bug...

I wondered about that too. Worst case scenario if I have to apply it after every washing it will still come out way cheaper.

I just ran the numbers on a 1-1/4 gallon bottle of 36.9% that I found online and it comes out to less than a penny per ounce of 0.5% solution!

If it is not supposed to come in contact. Is it a problem when you start to sweat?

Nope, it is the binding agent when first applied. Forgot exactly what it was... binding,deliver... ? I use it on my hammock. Which I get into wet during summer camping trips to keep me cool all night long. I swear I have not retreated it in 2 years and the bugs are just now starting to bit thru the bottom. With that said, i dont wash the hammock often. Its not a repealent. If the bug contacts it, the bug dies.

Are they exactly the same? I wonder if one for cloth use has something or the one that is not for clothing use has something extra you dont want.
