I bought 200 acres about 3 years ago and was inspired by Stan R and his project thread I was 33 at the time and figured that why wait until retirement to start? You never know what life will throw at you so I just went for it! It is the best decision I could have made! Don't miss the lease game a bit. It all starts with a dream fellas

I was having to move to Tulsa for a job so I figured now was the time to buy my farm/ranch if I had the chance and I did. So at 30 I have my 50 acres and my house where my kids will grow up. It was the best thing that I could have done. My wife and I both decided that the move was the perfect time to escape the cluster of life in town and get away. I have a feeling this little piece of heaven I have will be the last place I ever live.

I am 52 . I can retire any time I want to. I hit my retirement numbers last summer. I will probably work 4 more years, that will get my 2 children out of college and give me 2 years to semi recover, then I am done. BIL/financial advisor convinced me it would be better to work 4 more years in order to receive a substantial benefit. Not sure I can make it that long. I would love to just stay right here in Abilene. It has all I need. I will play golf every day, as long as it is warm enough, and hunt or fish the other days. Hopefully the kids won't live too far away after they get married so that we can see the grandkids when and if they have any.

Semi-retired, wife and I had "plans", but we got to that time and realized that our kids and grandkids are here, my elderly mother is here, house paid for, etc. so we'll stay here and just visit those places we'd talked about before.

That's just one of the many positives about the move! Don't regret mine a bit either

Have been thinking hard on this lately. Like others the older I get the more sick I get of the hot summers. I go back and forth on plans from year to year but here is the latest.
Have a cabin on the white river in Arkansas that will be my mid-fall till late spring home (always been a dream of mine to have a riverfront home there). Rent it out during the summers.
Have a summer cabin most likely in far north Wisconsin(wife has family in WI) on one of those pristine lakes.
Will stay in Wisconsin until after bow season, then head to Arkansas for the rest of season there. Both areas have a lot of public hunting areas and great fishing.
Am sure next year I will be back to buying a couple hundred acres in Oklahoma.

We plan to spend 4-5 months in a mountain state during the 95 degree heat and 100% humidity months of the Gulfcoast........probably Colorado in the Eagle County area. The rest of the year in the suburbs of Houston, not sure if it will be this house as it waaaay more than we need.

I bought my dream place a few years ago, a 100 acre place in the country. I loved that place and basically took raw land and made a extra home away from home. I bought cows and a couple of horses to keep the taxes low. After six years of working on the place, taking care of my home, traveling for work and working full time. I was about dead.
I put the 100 acre place on the market and priced it so no one would buy it. The first guy that looked at the place bought it.
Since then, I sold our home and moved out to a rural area to live on a 18 hole golf course. We have a half acre there, a few nice lakes full of fish and a lot of friends. I will quit after this one.

                          Funny how priorities change

I've got four properties in three states.

I can't make it to all of them (and get anything done) without taking a month off of work.

And I've got chance love looking for another one.....what a moron I am

As a young kid right out of college a mentor of mine gave me what I think was great advice. He told me to engoy a little bit of retirement in everyday you work. That way when you do retire you can look back at all those things you did while you worked and not have to worry about catching up to your dreams when you are old.

I have been fortunate to take this advice and not wait for retirement to do and see things of this world and when I do retire I will have a very small bucket list.

I also had a very good freind of mine remind me that you cannot ski on a mutual fund or swim in stock certificates so buy something on the water and use it today and watch it grow in value.

We have done this and we have many family memories already while we are young enough to do so. For a relatively small investment you can get a lot on some water and park a camper or build a small house and use it today and it will grow in value equal to if not better than a retirement fund.

                            Just my .02

Moved out of the city (Dallas) four years ago, sold the house and left the craziness behind. Basically lived in the RV on the road for a few years, and started buying land with the money we saved.

Building two houses this year, lots of sweat equity and paying for them as we go ... one in the hill country and one in Colorado.

At 44, the heat is starting to get to me. The plan is to spend the good months in Texas and the hot months in Colorado.

Applied for Colorado elk and mule deer tags tonight
                              What part of Colorado?
