Im saying open cell 7-8" thick. I did a lot of research and read as much stuff as I could on building science. Check out the builder Matt Risinger on youtube and his blog. He is a huge advocate of building science and one of the few people that talk about it in the South. I foamed my roof line and went with a sealed attic. All gables and the roof line were sprayed 7-8" open cell. No soffit venting. The semi conditioned attic really helps out the a/c. My attic is consistently 5* or so warmer than the inside of my house. I have a 2100sqft house and my max bill has been about $100. This is a remodel from the 60's. New construction could be built much tighter.
Id actually look into exterior sheeting foam both on the roof and the exterior walls. Air seal the hell out of the place. This is your one opportunity.
