Depends how fast you need them killed. If you can give it a few days, Amdro will get them -- takes about a week for ants to gather and ingest the bait. A pound will do an acre, btw. If you need them dead in a few hours and know where all the mounds are, use Orthene, a white powder that you sprinkle on the mound. Orthene is a contact-kill, which sticks on ants' waxy exterior when they walk through it; then they track it deep into the mound, where it rubs off on the tunnel walls and the other ants which they contact. You can even start with the bait first, give it a few days and hit any surviving mounds later with the contact-kill.

I have not had a problem with reappearing until the next year.
Acephate is the active ingredient, dry powder that can also be mixed with water for a spray. A small amount on the mound works well. An old squeeze bottle for condiments works well.

If it is a sunny day, the ants will have their eggs just beneath the surface of the mound. Kicking the dirt away and sprinkling the eggs with the powder wipes the mound out.

If you have a broadcast sprayer, it does not take much for 1.5 acres. That method will work. Then you can spray the perimeter to keep them out, as they will want to move in to fresh territory.

I'm a sports field manager. I use Bengal fire ain't mound treatment. It will kill the mound over night and it won't come back. Keep treating any mounds that pop up and soon u won't have any left. Best part is it doesn't smell like Acephate does.

Instant grits kills them. And it's cheap.
