    Fire ant mound treatment?

What works for you? Would be way to expensive to treat my whole 1.5 acres so I end up treating just the mounds. I have a 2 year old and have my sisters boy most evenings who is 4 and they are fire ant magnets. Both know what to look for and avoid them as best they can but they still find them pretty regularly. I know what works for me but my wife doesn't like all the dead spots in the yard!. I've had some luck with amdro but about half the mounds I treat end up just moving or dying back then repopulating.

What do you use that actually works?

I've had good luck with Ascend, Got it at my local DIY pest control place.

I use Orthene from Ortho. It is a white powder and takes very little (I think a tablespoon) to kill a mound. Sprinkle it on while it is dry and about 24 hours later, no ants.

I have not had a problem with reappearing until the next year.

I buy three sacks of Amdro every year about this time and put it out with a fertilizer/seeder behind my mower. I go pretty fast and get it all over the yard. Any mounds that come up I hit with the shaker bag. It works for me.

I used to use Amdro but switched to the Bengal Ultradust 2X I get at Lowes. It is pretty much an instant wipeout of the mound with one dusting. No ants an hour later. No queen migration.

I use the Ortho white powder as well. Mix in a little corn meal with it and seems to get down inside the mound better. Works for me and I don't know if they move or not but I just treat any mounds I see come up.

Orthene is extremely effective. It is a soluble powder, so you can make a spray out of it also. It is now lemon scented, the original was a horrible smell.

For my yard, a couple teaspoons of orange oil mixed with a gallon of water kills them every time. But I don't kill off all my mounds. Fire ants feed heavily on fleas and ticks. Since I have switched to organics and leave a few fire ant mounds, I have had zero flea and tick issues on my pups

I use and am happy with ortho as well. Stuff stinks to high heaven, but works.

This is what I've been using for years and haven't had any issues.

Well the wife stepped in a mound the other day and didn't know it till her feet were covered! Needless to say, it was WW3 on the ants, and some grass ended up getting caught in the cross fire. My yard looks like a twister mat but there are very few ants left!

Demon works great. It kills the entire mound in about 30 minutes. Mix it just like you would if you were spraying the house for scorpions and spiders. Then you stir up the mound bystepping on it and spray them.

been using the same stuff for years. it really does a great job. Though I am not as nice to only put a tablespoon on them.
