BrianL the way i learned was all trial and error, had no one show me the ropes, you can take as much or as little as you want, i like to keep it to a minimum. anchor, tackle bag with all hooks, and soft plastics, something to drink and eat, and 2 poles. you will have to find out what works for you

Impossible to say what's best. It all depends on what you are looking for.
If you want to just fish and not paddle much you get one answer.
If you like to paddle just as much as fish you get a different answer.
If you like taking the kids out yet another answer.
The pescador 12 pictured above is less than $500 and probably the most versatile yak out there. I've had mine in creeks, rivers, lakes, surf, BTB just about anywhere you can imagine.
There are a lot of demo days in the Spring. My advice would be to go and paddle as many different kayaks as you can before you buy.
AND GO TAKE KAYAK LESSONS - I can't tell you how many guys I see with the paddle upside down and taking 3 strokes for every one you should be taking. Take paddling lessons and you will enjoy yourself sooooo much more.

Wear your life vest.........
Night fishing have a 360 degree white light and whistle. (Required by Law)
If your kayak has a pedal system. Bring a paddle along. That pedal drive can break.
Dry store a first aid kit, fire starter & rain gear. If you get stranded for an overnighter you have shelter and a way to start a fire.
Rig your kayak out the best you can and do not over load it.
Have fun and use the buddy system. Try not to go alone. Even a stranger will do.
Other gear is a couple knives. Pliers
Lowrance downscan elite 500/GPS chart plot.
I have a small anchor for deep water. And a stake out pole for marsh and shallows.
My Kayak is a Hobie PA12
DIY stuff is always awesome. I made my stake out pole and my rod holder system. And I jugline from my Yak!!!
