Is there not a key that you can use to get in if it is locked?

But you don't worry when you drive 65 mph with thousands of other unknown drivers going 65 mph the opposite direction just a few feet away?

As far as I know, its locked from inside and cannot be opened at all from outside ever since 9/11.

Why can't people that want to die and don't want help just take themselves out, why is there this need to take others with you?? These mass shootings, bombings, plane crashes. It has to be the most selfish thing you can do in life, just awful

Valid point, but the press has a knack for sensational stories. I think a pilot gone rogue would fit that category. They couldn't resist. They wake up each day hoping for a meaty story to report.... been a slow new cycle as of late.

If it was any form of terrorism, either a group would have claimed responsibility by now or terrorist sentiment would be found in the guys house. I'm going with suicide or he did something stupid then had a stroke

I know it is a strong door, but can it be broken into with all the passengers help?

Yes, but in over 30 years of public safety work, I've seen exactly TWO incidents where a person intentionally drove their car into an oncoming vehicle to commit suicide. Let that sink in.

Not trying to be argumentative, just trying to point out that there's an important degree of difference. In a commercial aircraft, you have no control; you're strapped into an anchor if the pilot decides to crash the aircraft. Driving your own vehicle, you at least have some degree of control and may be able to avoid a kamikaze driver trying to torpedo you.

                  Edit:
Listening to the BBC last night on shortwave, they report
                  1) While the pilot was gone, the co-pilot had to get out of his seat and manually engage the security lock on the door.
                  2) There were repeated calls from ATC and other aircraft in the area asking if there was a problem. The co-pilot can be heard calmly breathing.
                  3) As Willwork04 posted, the pilot banged on the door and yelled for eight solid minutes. Again, the co-pilot can be heard breathing calmly as chaos goes on around him.
                  4) Finally, the altitude adjustment is a knob that must be rotated manually "many, many times" to zero out the altitude.

Very solid evidence that the co-pilot intentionally murdered 149 people during the course of his own suicide.

Exactly...but I'm still second guessing that trip to Mexico in June!

Why does it matter if you have "control"? Statistics are statistics. Driving is much more dangerous that flying. Everyone freaks out because they don't have "control" of the airplane. But, when it comes down to it. It is safer than flying. Whether you have the controls or not.

You could argue that you need to examine the number of car accident deaths where the person being killed was completely innocent (wrong place, wrong time) vs. airplane deaths. My money would still be that flying is significantly safer.

Need air marshals on every flight? It may not of even helped. Terrible deal.

Oh great! Now I am not leaving my house of the green screen. Haha. Get on, strap in, and pray for the best. I don't care for flying but it has to be done if you want to travel. Like you are pointing out. We can try all we want to control our environment but one drunk driver and it could be lights out.
Prayers for all those innocent people on that plane. Dang shame is what it is. One idiot affected so many in a horrible way.

I agree. I think it could have. He would have had a key to the cockpit or at least a fire arm to convince that lock to open.

Prayers for the children aboard that flight. There was an American woman and her little girl aboard. Just sickening. There are so many of these lately. Is it coincidence, or is it biblical?
