Getting a title?

A buddy of mine purchased a 4-wheeler without a title. He just got a bill of sale. When he started the process of trying to get a title he found out there was a lien of the machine. The finance company got involved and reposessed the 4-wheeler. My buddy was out the $2500 he paid for it.
I won't buy anything that requires a title if I can't get it at the time of purchase.

Is there anyway to do a search on serial to see for yourself before I go through all this trouble

You can get a bonded title. Just takes some paperwork and $250, but fairly easy process.

Will they just run the serial and if it's not reported were all clear I don't trust someone that they wouldn't just say yeah it's stolen just to get the four wheeler and the cash from when they sold it

Ok called the tax office I have 2 options 1) get original owner to file for lost title 2) do a bond and its 3 yrs then I can get a bonded title so sounds like I'm SOL unless I find original owner
