I believe brakes are required for 4501 pounds and above. Exactly 4500 pounds and below is not required to have brakes.
Bingo, the article linked early on in this thread states -4501# and up for the increased scrutiny to apply.
I was able to renew the registration online without the need of an inspection.
My travel trailer, no dice. And I'm slated to work most weekdays until the end of the month so I might be finding out what the late fees are.

(b) An owner is not required to register a vehicle that is used only temporarily on the highways if the vehicle is:
(1) a farm trailer or farm semitrailer with a gross weight of more than 4,000 pounds but not more than 34,000 pounds that is used exclusively:
(A) to transport seasonally harvested agricultural products or livestock from the place of production to the place of processing, market, or storage;
(B) to transport farm supplies from the place of loading to the farm; or
(C) for the purpose of participating in equine activities or attending livestock shows, as defined by Section 87.001, Civil Practice and Remedies Code;
So you don't need proof of any farm exemption to register your farm trailer because it doesn't need to be registered at all you do not need farm LP on a farm trailer it required no LP at all
If you're pulled over for no license plate, at the very least you'll be delayed on the side of the road trying to explain your temporary use of a trailer to haul farm related items.

Good deal. It would have stunk to have had to back pay for the years it wasn't using the highway/road system.
About the 4500 # rating of my trailer, I'm lucky my builder had the foresight to title mine as such, as I can image is a standard practice for a lot of them.Last edited by DaveC; 03-23-2015, 06:10 PM.

Just about every 16' tandem axle lowboy trailer I have ever seen is rated for 4500# or less for this very reason to avoid the brake requirement.
I would avoid purchasing any trailer from any of the companies listed in this thread that did not install brakes on a 4501# or more trailer.
IMO that is a shady unethical policy to not install brakes if the customer doesn't request them if state law requires them.

You know I don't have a problem with this actually. Just maybe it will get some of the Jake leg trailers that have no brakes, no lights, shoddy tires, etc to come into compliance.

Maybe, just maybe that'll be the case.
However, most of the unsafe trailers I see on the roads are smaller, <4500lb trailers, which are exempt from inspection.

The phrases....."its for your safety" or "for the children" or "for the greater good" precedes every government encroachment into our lives. There is always a "good reason" for taxing or regulating us.
Since we became a nation how many forest have been cut down to write all the laws we have on the books. This is just one of hundreds of thousands......
