Register it for 4500# or less, and you don't need brakes or inspection.

I didn't want to confuse them even more by throwing in the tongue weight on the truck taking some of the load off of the trailer.
lol I understand. I tried to simplify it. Has anyone renewed tags on their boat trailer? Seems like mine went up. It's a 14 foot flatbottom with a homemade trailer and it's $70 bucks

Simplest thing to do. Get any & all trailers inspected. It's only $14.50 per 12 months. That's $.0397 per day. Geez

I renewed mine in February for tags that expire in March.
            It cost me $56.
My setup is same as yours, homemade trailer with 14' flatbottom.

I own 3 trailers myself, another one with my brother, and use 2 of my father's.
            My brother owns another trailer.
All 7 trailers are exempt from inspection because of farm tags and/or under 4500# registered GVWR.
Why spend an extra $101.50/year if it's not necessary?

You've got to get your truck inspected anyway, hook up the trailer and do it all at the same time.

You only "go into town" once a year for your truck inspection?

I find it highly unlikely that you would need to make a special trip just to get your trailer inspection.
Is it inconvenient to hook up your trailer just to get it inspected? Yes, but it's only once a year and if you plan it out right, it wouldn't be that big of a deal.

Not to pry into your business, but how many, and what type of trailers do you have that are not exempt from inspections?

It would be much easier and cheaper to register the trailer for the proper GVWR and get farm tags back on it.
It took me about 15 minutes to fill out the paperwork to get the farm/ag exemption card.
I showed that card to the county, and I got $5 farm trailer tags for my 14k GVWR 24' gooseneck.
How much are you paying for your 4k GVWR 20' horse trailer with regular tags?
They would not let me, I tried. $57.00 current registration. I explained what I used the trailer for and how much weight I pulled with it. They would not listen and offered no help. I got fed up with the whole deal.I will give it one more shot this year its due now. This was a case of them wanting more money pure and simple.

Well then you are 100% ok. Unless u use them "farm tag" trailers not for farm use.

Do you have a Ag/Timber exemption card?
                          If not, get that first.
All you have to do is show them your Ag/Timber card and they give you farm tags.
I did this with a trailer, a Jeep, and a truck within the last 12 months. Show them the card and walk out with farm plates.

Maybe they will start a bicycle inspection for all the cyclists using the roads.
I would rather see them do that rather than the trailer inspection.

It would be my bet that the majority of folks on here don't quality for the Ag/Timber exemption card without lying.

You guys are gonna hate this, but if it's pulled down the road it should be inspected. I don't care if it's got a gvwr of 100lbs.
It's pulled down the road at hwy speeds where my family drives...
