I used 4hi this morning going to work. I have it might as well use it. On the way home (we go to off early) I used it again. I have it might as well use it. I got work safe, got home safe, we are all happy here.

Dont want to burn out my xfer case for when its really needed. Such as a few years ago when there was numerous overpasses frozen over. Then I would stop and put it in 4hi to cross. There was no problem stopping prior because there was no one out for a mile or 2 in any direction simply because it was so bad out.
Why would you stop to shift from 2hi to 4hi? Only necessary when going into and out of 4lo

I leave my 4X4 truck at home and drive my Front Wheel Drive commuter on days like this.

I agree with you, but it probably wouldn't help much.
Knowing what to do and actually doing it usually don't happen at the same time when you're dealing with drivers on a public roadway.
Driving in the left lane with no one in the right lane comes to mind, lol.

You should've asked your salesman when you bought it.

So 4wd doesn't do anything in ice, other than starting from a stop or on a good incline?
Those would be 2 good reasons to use 4wd in ice.

Edit- where I live we have all kinds of turns and inclines/declines. It's definitely needed.
I've gotta ask what's the point/reason for neutral when stopping?

                Couple of questions,
How would you "burn out" your xfer case?
Why stop to shift into 4hi?

If its a paved road, there is no call for 4wd. Unpaved, maybe.

Shifting into neutral takes the power from the wheels. Ever seen cars start to slide or go sideways when stopping even if they are going slow and not slamming on the brakes? That's what causes it. Takes the power transfer away from the wheels and they have no desire to spin at all. Learned that little trick in Kansas during some big winter weather from an old timer good ok boy, and it works!

Taking the front wheel drive car....it is better than any 4 wheel drive in ice.

All in all, 4wd or not. There's no substitute for good winter rated tires.

Even the best tires wont help if you don't apply them with the proper amount of caution and common sense . Whatever you are driving and wherever you are headed, be careful out there.
