I don't like the 4x4 low in my '13 F150. I'm sure it's great for going down steep hills, but otherwise it just seems to rev up and down randomly and shift when it wants to. 4x4 high feels much more natural, and I can pull the lever down to 2 or 1 if I need to.

                      I only engage 4wd when I can't go anymore in 2wd

                          ^this

Dad always told me keep it in 2wd till you can't go no farther, then it's 4x4 time. If you get stuck in 4x4 your up s**t creek.

2Hi, but our roads haven't been frozen over yet . Hope it doesn't get bad enough to need 4hi. I would never engage 4lo for highway driving, only low speed offroad crawls up or down steep trails, or crawling out of slick situations where 4hi might spin and get me in deeper. Have also been known to use it when pulling a heavy trailer when offroad.

Just remember, 4wd only gets you going. Its doesn't help you stop faster. A lot of people around here forget that part and think that 4wd is a cure-all for icy conditions.

You may already have known that depending on where you live, but it is worth repeating for anyone else reading this that may not have.

this weather is not bad enough yet to warrant shifting out of 2wd.
