I believe it runs from San Antonio to New Orleans every 4 days. I have made a lot of money sitting waiting in amtrak to go by.

Looks like 9 1/2 hour trip Houston to New Orleans and rates from $106 to $212 each way for 2 people.

Unless you are on the east coast it really isn't worth it.

It's a cool and different way to travel. There is a bar, cafe, restaurant, viewing areas, and sleeper rooms. You just can't be in a hurry though. Most of the tracks are owned by the freight lines and their trains take priority over AmTrak. AmTrak also runs late quite frequently. And there are some interesting people on the trains -- think Greyhound bus, but maybe not as bad.

Little sis used to do it a BUCH. She loves it, but it is SLOW... all about the time you have

I've done the Eurorail as well. Don't think I would want to deal with the expense or hassles of the Us rail system unless gas goes way up.

Not really the same thing, but my wife takes the commuter from downtown Ft. Worth to work @ Children's Medical Center in Dallas all the time. Drops her off right by the door. She loves it.

I took one from Houston to Dallas back in the early 90's. We hit a car at a rr crossing and it took all day for them to clear the wreckage. I was young but I remember it like it was yesterday. Its something that everyone should do once.

Took a 6 hour ride in Alaska a couple years ago and it was cool. Of course they were more tourist trains so any time something interesting was seen they would slow down or stop but it was pretty cool.

I can't see you saving a ton of money going by train over flying.

Southwest usually has dirt cheap airfare to places like that.

I traveled by train one time while working in Tunisia. A five hour trip from Tunis to Sfax on the Mediterranean coast. I was in first class but all that meant is there was no goats and chickens. I did see a Roman Coliseum that I didn't know about.

Wife and kids took Amtrak from St. Louis to Dallas. Ended up taking over 48 hours.... my wife was about to lose it. Would not recommend it.
