    Travelling by train...

Does anyone do it anymore? Going to new Orleans in august and looking for alternatives to driving. Flying is $$$. Never traveled by train and got curious

I keep thinking about it. But from what I have seen the schedules are bad and cost is not cheep.

I traveled all over Italy by train and loved it. If I got the chance here, I would do it in a heartbeat

Not sure about prices anymore but YOU WILL BE LATE so don't be on a tight schedule. We took the Amtrak from McGregor to Dallas (a 2hr drive) just for fun and it took all day! With all the ports coming from the south that your sharing tracks with it makes for a SLOW go.

I've looked into it before for a change of pace. Ramtrack here was as or more expensive than flying and it took too much time.

Overseas I'd do it in a heartbeat.

Wife and I go from Mineola to Ft Worth , and back all the time. Round trip about $70 for the two of us. Haven't had a issue with train being more than 30 minutes late. Have heard some people have had bad experiences. Most of the time it was a car train wreck or a lot of fright trains. The train is the only way to go. Club and dinning car, large seats snack bar and NO STRESS!!!

My son and I took a trip from Houston to Yuma AZ and back in the mid 90's. My oldest was stationed there in the Marine Corps.

We met some real characters. One old man had been a make up artist during the golden era of movies in Hollywood. He had worked there from the 1940-70's. He told the dirtiest jokes I ever heard and had hundreds in his memory.

It was a long ride going and even longer coming back. As we came back into the west side of Houston it really slowed down. Took about 4 hours from Hwy 6 to downtown. I was ready to get off.

I've done it in short distances several times to keep from driving on I-35. Taylor to Fort Worth isn't bad. I have also done Taylor to McGregor woth the kids to stay with friends there for a couple days just so the kids could experience it. Departure time and arrival time are correct less than 50% of the time for the times we have traveled. If you havr a way to pass the time and there is decent scenery along the route you are traveling than it's not bad.

Only in Europe. They have their rail system down pat! I am curious about taking a trip here in the states.

I took a train from Fort Worth to San Antonio once when I chaperoned the Sr. class trip. It was a neat trip, but it was long. Took us 9 1/2 hours from boarding to disembarking. Ide probably do it again for vacation when I didn't have a set time schedule, but definitely not if I had a schedule to keep.

Used to get in in Ft worth when going to AA center. No traffic, no parking fees and they drop you off quite literally at the door.

I looked into taking a train back from Seattle to DFW last year and it was well over $1000 and took 4 days. To fly was about $180 and took 3:40.

That was my experience looking to go from Houston to Atlanta.
