I think he may have been hung up in a fence, pulled free and degloved the meat off his leg or it had not recieved enough circulation during that time and the leg died.

Yea I wouldn't take the chance in eating him. Glad he was put out of his misery!

Could be but I don't remember seeing many hung by a front leg in a fence. No bones were broken.

I just recently read what a noted Texas wildlife biologist said that when a buck is seriously injured that his body defense mechanisms set in and stop the production of testosterone which is what makes the antlers shed. It is the body's last effort to survive.

My dad shot a deer years ago and a horn fell off when he hit the ground. Rolled him over for field dressing and the first incision spilled p u s s everywhere. Needless to say we didn't finish.

He shot a 7 Saturday night that had a broken left knee. Poor deer fell over 2 times trying to feed. He prolly weighed 70 or 80 lbs

That makes a lot of sense. This was a 6.5 year old buck with a body like a doe. Look how skinny his neck is. He had no muscle structure at all. Taxidermist can fix the shed antler no problem. Amazing that he could survive that long. This next cold spell probably would have finished him. I bet he was a stud when he was healthy.

I speculate the damage was from a fence. Usually a snake bite makes a golf ball sized knot. Hard to speculate not knowing what actually happened.
