While I am not in the deer breeding business and don't know everything about it, I really never imagined this to be possible. My uncle runs a breeding operation in Young County and knows a lot of the other breeding operation owners/managers in the texas area. December 2006 a breeder crossed a doe that was a sire from some big named buck with a son I believe of (max or maxbo) can't remember which and out came a buck. This year as a yearling it scores 285" and the semen strands are going for $10,000/straw. At 50 straws available the owner is looking at a $500,000 payday. Now that is what I call return on investment! Pretty incredible

It seems totally ridiculous to me that it's come to this. No wonder hunting is becoming to expensive for most people. The number of hunters is dropping each year now- instead of growing like it should- and people wonder why. I wonder how long it will be before hunting becomes so expensive that it becomes a sport for the aristocracy only- like it is in europe and many other countries?
Besides- what is big enough? I mean, how big does a genetically engineered deer need to get before it becomes a new species? Many of them already look like monstrosities to me- not like a deer. I like big racks as much as most people, but the obsession with antler size is getting out of hand, in my opinion.
Sorry if I got off track- I don't mean to hijack your thread- it's an amazing thing to have a young deer at that size. I just wish it was NATURALLY occurring and that it would remain the rare special occurance that it once was when a truly amazing deer appeared out of the woods- not simply the product of some mad scientist/rancher.
