I think the most critical question is... What distance are you comfortable taking a shot on game with your rifle/caliber?

Part of that is going to be a function of which scope he chooses, isn't it?

NOTHING better than a sightron sIII unless you willing to spend over twice the money. See if you can find one to play with and i believe you will be duly impressed.

I think the scope is secondary. If your not comfortable making a wind call past 300 yards why would you need a 16x scope?

Go with Vortex. Great scopes and pretty good prices. Just put a Viper HS-T 4-16x44 on my Tikka and I absolutely love it. Extremely clear and preforms outstanding in low light situations.

Sightron is the new sleeper brand IMO. The new Vortex, so to speak. Everything Sightron I've seen is equal to anything 2x it's price.

I love my Sightron binoculars. They are unlike any others I've ever owned. I sold a $900 pair of Zeiss binocs after owning my $179 pair of Sightron binoc's for a while. Seriously good glass.

                      Nikon monarch 5 very clear. I had a 4x16-42mm. Less than $500

I agree but for a good scope on a standard hunting scenario. I think it's the cost affective option for sure. With some range shooting you can use the dots as reference points for long shots and the scope is more than clear enough to see what you are shooting at. I'd say, $359 every time!
