My current plan is to build points for one of the better units in WY and fill the gap with elk and mulies.

I can't speak for anyone else, but the cost for private ranch hunts really makes these kind of options prohibitive. I don't know what the cost is for JJ-Matt's operation, but when I compared costs online to just buying points, applying for the tag, and driving to WY and hunting, the latter was still cheaper and more adventurous.

This is why this thread interested me. I have nothing against private ranch hunting and will probably do it plenty in my hunting life, but right now, while buying a house and having other expenses, it is a difficult proposition. That said, if I do DIY in WY I will be going solo more than likely. I'm the only large animal hunter among my friends that is willing to travel. Sorry to butt in on your thread, but there is some good information and I appreciate the education.

We do it and have a 100% success rate hunting public in WY. We killed these 3 in one day. Need any info or advice pm me your number and I will help you out. We routinely look over 200-300 goats a day on public land.

Not hard where there's lots of private. Pretty hard where there's lots of public. The trick is, if you just want a goat hunt, to get a place to hunt in the Eastern part of the state. Most of the sure enough monster goats are not there. Access can be a problem for non-residents. Hard to knock on doors from 1500 miles away. I've hunted four places in the last ten years for one reason or another, but have managed to stay in the game. Tresspass prices have ranged from $150 for the first place we hunted to $500 for the place we currently hunt ( but it has permenant blinds already up on most water holes ). Wyoming G&F used to have landowner lists for the asking, but I found them outdated and almost worthless. I understand they don't have them any more. If I were just starting to look, I would get my hands on some rancher's info ( maybe the new GPS with L/O info ) and just start calling. Access for goats is much easier to get than deer or elk. Goats compete with sheep and cattle. Ranchers by and large don't like goats, hence they are more likely to let you hunt for a resasonable tresspass fee. That said, there are lots of outfitters leasing up land in E Wyo now, so.......

Good luck in your search, the speed goat is a worthy adversary, and it ain't always easy !
