my advice : sell your current rifle and use the funds to buy a Rem 700 magnum action rifle (7mag, 300 WM, etc..)

once you have your new rifle , sell the barrel and stock ... action will be the donor for custom build . Save the bottom metal

buy a used HS Precision stock for $225
Send action to PacNor and they will true/blueprint your action and thread, chamber, install a stainless steel select match grade barrel for $575.

Shoot "as-is" or skim bed action to stock for another $100

throw away factory trigger and buy a Jewell
I have a browning A-bolt 300 Win mag. Your thoughts on that gun?

          Stevensville, MT

I've owned 18-20 Cooper Rifles since 1994 and they shoot lights out . I once knew the entire staff including CEO, head machinist, wood man, and the QC guy who shoot most of the test groups. They have all moved on as Cooper is under new ownership

prices have gone through the roof in last 2-3 yrs. like everything in the firearms industry

          I still have 3 Coopers ... 17 HeBee, 20 Killer Bee, 257 Ackley Improved

Cooper use to specialize in custom single shot, wildcat calibers .. 17's, 20's, 22's

Budget? Depends on final piece of equipment. $1500 +\- maybe $2000 maybe more. That's why I'm trying to see who can do the job.

very few GS's will touch an Abolt

barrels are a PIA to remove, very few aftermarket stock and trigger choices, and the hexagonal action requires specialized tooling which limited number of GS's have

              stick with a Rem 700

I can appreciate the effort, value, and hobby in building your own "custom" rifle. But if I'm going to spend $1,500, why wouldn't most just buy the SAKO and be done with it?

I followed the Cajun's advice and had my childhood Remington model 700 270 rebuilt. Just used the action. Now has a new barrel, McMillan stock, Jewell trigger and Swarovski scope. I used hill country rifles. They aren't cheap but they helped me out with another rifle so I was comfortable with them. I shot 3 three shot groups out of it 2 weekends ago with factory Ammo. All were 0.75-0.5 inch groups with a backpack and fleece vest as a rest. Proceeded to kill 2 aoudads and a whitetail doe with it. My buddy shot a mule deer with it. Shoots lights out and I am not a great rifleman. Listen to Cajun Blake. The man knows his stuff and has helped me a couple times.
