The number is ALL you need. I bought one for my stepson and I don't know the number. His mom sent me the number over text message and that did just fine

I went to Academy in Austin and was told I needed the actual card (had birth certificate with me and asked if wife could text number to me). Went to Dicks after I swung home and just in passing talked to the girl processing the license and she stated they require the card as well. Seems others don't require the card, and TPWD may not either, but the two people I dealt with sure did.

Probably was the location. I was at Walmart. Good to know academy and Dicks want it though
