Not defending the broadhead. But it sounds like it was a bad shot either way.

Glad the deer was recovered and hopefully you got to it before the coyotes and buzzards.

sorry, no hole pics. but, based on what I saw, they did not open. looked like a 2 blade wound on both sides. arrow was laying on ground after pass thru.

So, how did the grass get under the blade on the far side? I've seen where they close when someone pulls the arrow up out of the ground. The soil pulls the blades back to the closed position. I've don it my self numerous times.

Reapers close after they pass through. They don't open upon impact, but after they penetrate the skin.

I shot a doe earlier this season and only had one blade open. It lodged in a log after passing through and only one blade was out. Exit wound confirmed it. She still only went 30 yards and died. Killed 3 deer this year with GRs that went no more than 60 yards, but I had no bloodtrails. Think I'm going to go back to Rage next year just to get a good blood trail.

^^^^ this! it's mechanical it's bound to fail sooner or later. I've never had a "failure," or lost a pig or deer shooting it w a reliable fixed blade.

I shot a deer last Friday with a g.r. ss 2" whitetail special and it looked like they didn't open. But when we started cutting him up it was obvious that they opened under the skin

that sudden stop when the arrow hits the ground causes the blades to swing back forward (closed).
set up a target that will stop your arrows but not completely pass through, tape a piece of paper to the back of the target. take a shot at it and look before pulling the arrow out, the blades will be closed, but the paper will show the cuts.
