    Hog Attractant?

I am in the process of building a hog trap and keep reading that people use diesel and corn to attract hogs. It's supposed to keep the deer away and just attract hogs. What ratio of diesel/corn?

What other attractants do you use?

Don't really want to buy a store bought attractant, unless there is one out there that attracts only hogs.

Just mix it up, no ratio really. It is not that it attracts hogs. It's only that hogs are the only animals nasty enough to eat it. With that said I have had hogs turn their nose up to diesel corn and walk on by. I also have found dead hogs in the trap the next morning after baiting with diesel corn. If your concern is trapping deer by accident you need a door that hogs have to push thru. I don't trigger the door on my trap. Just leave it open a little and they push their way in. Before that have had to release busted up deer from the trap. Which is always horrible to watch. The break their nose and cut up their necks trying to get out. Oh and eventually the coons find your diesel corn and eat it too.

That will work, just have the spring pulling in closed but leave a small gap or put a "funnel" so they know how to get in. Doe in a trap is one thing, bucks in a trap is a nightmare. If can design someway to open the door with out having to stick your arm in the trap to open it would be great. I know everytime I stick my arm in there to let a fawn or other deer out its about to get broke off in there.

I will have a rope connected to the top of the door to pull it open from the outside. The plan was to have a pressure plate in the rear of the trap to trigger the door. After it's tripped they can still push through the door.

We mix a 5 gal bucket of corn with 2 packs watermelon jello powder and one 2lt bottle of big red soda. They like the stuff

I've used diesel, jello and hog wild. They eat it all.

For the diesel we got dug about a 3ft hole with a post hole digger. Filled it with corn and poured diesel over it. No logic to it just until it was saturated. A few days later we had a crater that could have been seen from the moon.

Honestly though--- they will just eat the corn. Not sure if the attractants are really attracting them.

X2. This is will work just as good, if not better, than anything you could use. Heck, as much as diesel costs there is no way I would waste it on a dang pig.

i just use corn for my all seasons trap and move it around from time to time. Always seems to work.

I'm not sure how familiar you are with building or running hog traps, but my only advise is to keep your trip wire "mechanism" as simple as possible. No pulleys, etc. There is nothing worse than having to spend an hour repairing your trap after catching hogs. I can repair or replace my trip wire setup in a matter of minutes.

Best trapping advise I can give you is just use corn.

Only put the corn in the trap. Don't sprinkle it all around the outside. You want them in the trap.

Don't set the trap until they are eating everything on the inside in one night.

Oh an build your traps as big as possible.

Get a crappy ice chest, out corn in it and pour a couple cans of cheap beer in it. Let sit closed at least two days to sour. Hogs will love it
