Best way to put a horse down ?

This is terrible but I have put a horse down today don't know how I should go about doing it. Anybody here have experience with that. What about disposal?

.22 between the eyes and a backhoe. Or call a rendering company but expect to pay $300-400.

Call a vet to do it. They should have a contact for disposal. Sorry.

Vet will charge anywhere from 150 to 500 just to put them down if they come to your place. A well place bullet is just as humane if you can handle it.

Yep that is if you liked him enough to bury him. If not they make for excellent coyote bait if hauled off to a back pasture where you won't smell him but can still shoot the coyotes.

In the same shoes with a 27 year old horse. Man it is tough to see them go down.

Great gesture. Ive put many cows down with my 357. Im sure a horse would be a little more difficult, but sure beats paying money for someone to do it.

                      Okay this can be tricky.
First contact your vet and find out what the local legal guidelines are.
Some places you can get into hot water putting down a horse.

That said make a cross from left ear to right eye and right ear to left eye.
Straight in shot NOT at an angle.
It is not an easy thing to do.
Disposal dig a hole with a backhoe. In the 60's we would burn in a big fire on big ranches but you have to be real careful now days.
There may be a rendering plant near you that can help.

                      Good Luck.

Large caliber pistol to the ear hole. I don't envy you and would get the vet to come out. If he's really suffering and can't wait...pistol.

Had to do it on the side of a road one night with a Sig .45. Not fun. Horse had a broken back. I don't envy you.
