        Ended up getting a 97 f250, freshly rebuilt tranny, 244000 miles , fresh paint, super clean interior, recon lights, kick butt stereo, all for 4000.

              That's a good deal and those trucks last a lot longer than previously mentioned. Normal wear and tear but that's to be expected

                  I have a 2002 crew cab 4x4. It has 166000 miles and I have had no problems with it. It averages about 14.8 miles per gallon. I'm fixing to let my son drive it to school. Ill ex driving my commuter car to work. When he goes off to college a will get him another vehicle.

                        02 f250 lariat 4x4 7.3l 277k miles original transmission, chipped for the last 100k never an issue. They're great trucks, they require minimal work and are very easy to maintain. Sounds like the op friend had bad luck or something else.
