    How Many Acres to Hunt

My wife and I have decided to add purchasing some land to the (hopefully not too distant) future goals. I know, buy as much land as you can but in all reality how much land is needed for 2-3 people to bow hunt? To rifle hunt? I know there will be two answers for each depending on the use of the surrounding land. I would appreciate hearing both. Thanks

I personally would want no less than 75-100 acres to hunt. Of course, location will dictate how much you need.

I think legally it's like 10 acres minimum but I could be wrong. I'm usually wrong. Just ask my wife.

Are you going to put any permanent structures on it? If you're going to do any clearing or if it's near a highway or something, I might bump the 'general' requirement up a little. I hunt on just above 80 acres, but a good...10 of them are cleared with barns and ponds and whatnot. I still see deer and pigs and there is a LOT of potential. I think the 'how many acres' question also has some counter-questions like -

How quickly do you want to be able to hunt it?

How many people will be putting in the work?

100 acres is pretty good for 3 people. That's what I hunt and to be honest feels a little cramped, but not because of the space.

More because it's just the same deer that hang around and hit each feeder. I feed heavily year round and right now we have 20-30 unique deer, but only 1 shooter.

As it gets cooler they'll move around more and some new ones will come in, but again you just compete for the same buck. Usually if a big dominant buck shows up he'll lock the 3 feeders we have down for some period of time. Right now the 1 shooter we have has had it locked down the entire off season.

Last year I got a nice old buck, but he was hard to pattern because he'd lock down 1 feeder or another for a few days and move on then come back etc..

Obviously different areas will act differently, and it depends on the people that will be hunting with you.

If people follow your program it makes it a lot better. If you have trigger happy people you'll get frustrated.

Depends on the type of land and where I would think. 100 acres in east or northeast Texas in the woods is different than 100 acres of open country. With 2-3 people bowhunting you will/might be pretty limited in setups I think. Wrong wind for a setup may mean a hunter doesn't have a backup that won't put him upwind and close to another hunter's setup. I currently hunt a couple of different 60-100 acre places, and on a couple it would be pretty easy to get 2-3 guys on it depending on the wind. 1 place is pretty open and doesn't have much cover except around one end, so it would be difficult to hunt many people. The open place is by far my best hunting though, as long as the wind is east or west to some degree. Good luck in your achieving your dream.

I've successfully bow hunted as little as 12 acres. I own and regularly hunt on my 16.5 acres. If you're going to regularly have 3 people hunting I would say no less than 25 acres per person otherwise it'll get too crowded. If it's just occasionally you could probably get away with 30-50 acres total...that would accommodate 2-3 hunting spots and you could rotate through them.

That's wrong. There is a law that allows county's to impose a second law that you have to have 10 or more acres to hunt. For example in Comal county, you need 10acres. Travis county- there is no minimum acreage. And I forget if the minimum is for hunting or discharging a weapon. There is also certain distances you must be from buildings etc.

100 should be good for 3 people to bow hunt. I hunted a 55 acre area with one other person and honestly it wasn't too bad. Long skinny property and we hunted opposite ends so nothing was ever cramped about it. It was also Hilly and pretty heavily wooded.

True and County and city laws will most of the time have a law restricting the discharge of a firearm on less than ten acres and most will word it describing the word "firearm" to include even a bow or sling shot. So read up on all the rules for that subdivision, city, county, HOA and anyone else that might be able to govern over or restrict the discharge of firearm or hunting the land you are looking to buy.
