Whay kind of oak tree is this?

We have been calling them shin oaks but I'm not real sure. They are a much smaller, softer wood tree than our "majority" live oaks with a very thin bark. During the ice storm we lost a ton of branches from them. They produce a very small acorn and are pretty plentiful right now compared to our live oaks. The live oaks are down in numbers this year thankfully.

Anyway, I just wanted to confirm the name so I can read more about what we really have on the place. thks

That's just an immature live oak. Shin oak is no taller than knee high- hence the name shin oak.

Shin oak. We have them at our place in rocksprings. Quite a few subspecies and they come in a variety of heights. Deer prefer them as a browse plant over live oak.

I have seen shin oaks up to 6 or 7 feet tall if they are in a low spot and getting good water.

Scrub oak is small oak that never get muck taller than a person. Most of the time they are as thick as brush.

One old timer told me he had to watch his bulls BC the scrub oak would damage the bulls 'tools' and it would get infected. He had to get a bull that had a tight package.

Shin Oak or Canyon Oak would be my guess. Never realized how many types of oak trees there really are.

We have immature small live oaks and these are nothing like them.

The acorns are the size of a shelled peanut for reference.

Smart, those are shin oaks as you have been correctly calling them. We have them in abundance here in Schleicher Country.
