    Amen.

I get tired of parents who expect public school teachers to be the sole educators of their children. It takes a good teacher AND good parents folks.

I have taught my grand kids to challenge the teachers. If something does not seem right speak up. When a teacher told my grandson everyone needs to be the same I straightened him right out. I explained we are only created equal and that is where it stops. Once we exercise our free will we are not the same any more. Besides, if we were all the same, there would be no doctors, nurses, builders, pilots, or teachers. We would be living in caves clubbing others over the head for food and shelter. So a system that makes everyone the same will never work. To think this from someone who probably thinks they celebrates diversity but only from the color of someones skin. Who is the real racist?

You would be wrong.I've got nearly 20 years is public school transportation.

I know in the three districts I have worked as well as where my dad drives a school bus they are not allowed to pick anyone up not on the list. Parents must come up in the summer and sign the kid up.

What would you do when that 8 year old that is not on your roster pulls a gun from his bag and kills half your bus load? It would be ALL on you and the district. Now if he was on your roster and did that you area then not liable.
If the kid has a gun then whether or not I let him on the bus would be a moot point. The district I work for has a fleet of 300 buses, covers 3 cities and a military base.Kids come and go all year long.A child can be enrolled in school and the paper work may or not have made it to transportation. If the child is an eligible rider and you deny service then he/she gets hit by a car/kidnapped/molested,which are far more likely to happen, how could you possibly justify that by saying "He's not on the list."We always err on the side of student safety.

I had to explain what happend and how libs like to try and make us feel guilty for being a great country. Then last week he asks me what is an afair and what is a lover? herd it in a book the english teacher is reading them. googled the book and it is for 8th grade and above for content. so I pray and try and be calm and explain to him this crap that he is asking about. Then today i walk through the door and he says my teacher called me a raicest today. WHAT!!!!! I say. well she is talking about african American. Mexican American. and what not. well my boy raised his hand and asked if they have pappers or are born here why arnt they just Americans. He lerned this from his grandfather who swam the rio grand became a American and was in the Korean war. he refuses to be called a Mexican American.
he is an American. my son has no hate for any Race. my mother is Indian my dad is german and my wife is full on mexican. I am going to try and meet someone at the school in the morning. Yall please pray I dont end up in the pokey.
You can do this ^^ or you can make a difference in another way by going school, getting certified in a content area, then start teaching.

At our daughter's "meet the teacher" gathering, there was a Dad that went off on a rant about a lot of the same stuff the OP is talking about. To her credit, she looked him right in the eye and said "I agree with a lot of what you are saying and all I can say is write your State Rep cause that's where it's coming from. Teachers are only implementing what they are told to do.

                Jruss,
Are these new teachers? I know we have quite a bit of new blood this year (am assuming our kids go to same school). My oldest graduated last year and youngest is a Sophomore this year. I guess it depends on the teacher but I have been pleased with several they have had over the years that were pretty much just the opposite of what you explained. There is always that one or two that are off the wall and I dont blame you for being ticked. Hopefully over the years your kids will experience both sides of the spectrum which is an education in itself. Is good for you to be there to set the record straight when things like this happen. Overall I have been very pleased with the school and think my kids have gotten a great education. Shoot, oldest got a full academic scholarship coming out of there.

First off, we treated the Indians pretty poorly. Of course now those in Oklahoma at least are getting rich off of the laws we put in place for them, so I guess they are getting what is coming to them.
As someone who has been in the teaching business for over 20 years, it bothers me to hear so many people bashing the education system. I have met a few teachers over the years who have not been good. But the vast majority really do care about kids and try their best. Why are educators not allowed to have opinions and points of view on issues just like everyone else. After all, that is a major part of what this country was founded on. Its called freedom of speech. I'm sure I have offended some of my students with my anti Obama comments. But I tell them that is only my opinion, and they are free to their own. When my daughter complains about other teachers when they have different ideas on what is right or wrong, I have never gotten upset about it. I just tell her they are wrong, and what I feel she should believe. Hopefully she believes the same thing as she gets older.
Here is what I see as the problem with the education system as it is now. Every kid is being guided toward going to college. Every kid is not cut out for college. Some because they are not interested in education, and some because they are just not smart enough. My wife is a college professor. And they now have to make modifications for students who struggle just like we have been doing in public school for years. How would you like for your doctor to need modifications to get thru medical school?
This is not an easy profession. Public school teachers have to take every kid sent to them and try to teach them something. Those in the private school get to pick only the ones they want. Major difference there. I can look in my room everyday and see kids who are dirty, hungry, unmotivated, uninterested students. I really feel for them because I know many of them don't have a real good chance in this world. I also see the opposite and know those kids have a great chance. What keeps me, and I'm sure most teachers going, is those kids we have all had who had no real chance. Had no home life. Had no help at all. When they come back and say thank you for helping me realize I could be something.
Parents in general have changed since I have been teaching. Too many make excuses for their kids. They are always there to bail them out of problems. When most of us where growing up, if we messed up at school, we got licks for it, and went about our business. Usually got it again when we got home. I don't see enough parents like that any more.
I'm sure many of you will disagree with all this, and that's cool. I heard this saying from a fellow educator / coach when I first started out, and it makes a lot of sense still. We don't breed em, we just coach em

I agree for sure with this (and have for a long time) and there is some good things happening on that front.
Last year or the year before our school actually implemented two different paths that students can choose. College or trades. Is a great program where starting junior year kids can go to the junior college and start learning a trade. Same as kids wanting the college route can take college courses.

I agree. Improvement is taking place in that area.

This is all part of House Bill 5. In a nut shell it did away with the "all kids go to college" mindset and now allows kids to choose the path in which they feel is best for them. It has flaws like everything else, but is a great step forward in education. The largest issue being that most 8th and 9th graders are not mature enough yet to understand the importance of their future and cannot think that far ahead.
