I sent an e-mail yesterday to the Editorial Manager of RACK magazine. It was then forward to the author who sent a prompt reply. He said he was going to look into it and get with me ASAP. He also added that in the 17 years, they have never published a illegally taken deer. Although there has been a couple of close calls, they were caught before it got published. I posted a thread the other day of the story. Unfortunately, I guess the thread went into a different direction and was ultimately removed.
Anyway, I'm waiting to see how this gets all panned out!!
Here is the letter:
I just read the Oct issue of Rack. I love this magazine, but I have a big question about one of the stories in this issue. Being an avid bow hunter, I usually skip over the rifle kill stories. But one caught my eye. A huge Texas deer!!! One, I'm from Texas, Second, the county it was taken is just north of the county I hunt in. So I took notice and read the story.
The story in question is about 18 year old Shelton Booth. He states he lost his lease for 2012, but he and his brother leased a family friend's 300 acres for the 2013 season. He goes on to say that being in the oil field, he had limited time to hunt and shot the first "legal" deer he saw, a 13 inch wide 8 point. Then, after a friend shot a big 8 point, he called Shelton and told him the bucks were chasing again. Two days later, Shelton goes out and kills the monster buck.
Here is where I'm confused. He killed these 2 bucks in Harrison county on his 300 acre lease. Harrison County is a AR county (Antler Restriction). Under Texas game laws, in a AR county, a person can only tag ONE buck that has a inside antler spread of 13 inches or greater!! Did he leave this information out on purpose?? Surely, Rack Magazine doesn't publish illegally taken deer??!!!
Please help in answering this question. How was this possible???
Thank You for your time,
