Redneck analysis of proper diet... and the results of such

Back in the 70's I weighed a buck eighty on a fat day and usually 165-170 and I ate McDonald's, pizza, Whataburger, chicken-fried steak, potatoes in every form, snacked on chips and drank beer and sodas by the gallon... it was normal for me to eat a large pizza and drink two to three pitchers of beer nearly every night. My breakfasts usually consisted of 6 eggs, steak and biscuits and gravy .. My BP was 110/70, and my BMI was less than 15%.

Then I hear how all this stuff is BAD for me and I'm going to end up weighing 400 pounds and/or die by the time I'm 30 if I keep this up...

So I decide to stop eating fried foods, stop eating fast foods, only eat pizza about once every couple of months and then never more than 3 slices of a medium, gave up chips, gave up sodas, drink beer only to be sociable and never more than two, and rarely eat a potato and then only baked.

Mostly I eat salads, grilled chicken, vegetables, and snack on fruit. I've been doing this since the early 80's and the results of this is this I now weigh 300 pounds, my BP is 130/80 without meds and 110/70 with meds and my BMI is around 40%...

So.... my conclusion is that they were totally wrong in their thinking and starting today I'm going back to eating, drinking and snacking on all the stuff I gave up in the 80's...

    Life is good....

For reference this is me in 1975..

It is all about metabolism and burning calories. You probably were a lot more active in your younger years and were able to burn off the extra calories from bad diet. I don't know you or your daily routine, but please, don't give up.

Brother, it’s simply harder to burn it off as the years add on.

I could eat and drink anything I wanted until I hit 40. Went from a fit 225 to 275.
Being a fireman didn't help. Got lazy sitting around waiting for tones to drop.
Well about 7 weeks ago I made a bet with a crew member who could loose 25lbs by sept.15.
I eased way up on carbs. And quit drinkin cokes and I'm down 25 lbs as of today.
If I have totally quit beer at the same time I might be down 35 by now.

It all boils down to calories in vs calories burned. As young bucks we can eat all day and drink all night. The older we get, the slower our metabolism gets and the less we active are. Please don't go back to eating bad. My father in law put on 50 lbs after he retired because all he did was sleep and nothing. It's not worth it.

Thankfully I'm not retired yet... still working 50 + hours a week... course I'm not out on the shop floor as much as I once was, but I do spend a good bit of time out there.. especially when I'm bringing a prototype to the production phase.

                But I got to say...

Them McDonald fries were darn good, along with that large coke yesterday afternoon.. I'd forgotten just how good them fries were...

Portion control is important as well. It limits calories.

I'm almost 60 and eat pretty good but still eat the good stuff too. Very active and at 5' 8 1/2" I'm about 160/165, BP perfect, pulse perfect, EKG perfect, cholesterol a little high but meds keep it in check, smoke and drink.
I'll die healthy and probably soon. But I'm darn good looking...

Yep it's all about each individuals metabolism. I've been skinny my whole life and eat and drink whatever I want and it makes no difference. So many times I've heard wait until you turn 30, then it was wait until you turn 40. Well I'm 46 now and weigh the same as I did when I was 20. I used to think it was because how active I was as I spent a lot of time running around in the mountains and playing sports but the last 7 years I've done very little for exercise and still weigh the same.

I got promoted at work and blew up 30lbs or so. I started doing the paleo thing, and I am sure I didn't do it right, but I lost 12lbs in a little over a week with only light workouts. I still love my chicken fried steak, fried chicken, etc.. but I have been trying to do more grilled fish/chicken and lots of fruit and nuts during the week and splurge on the weekend with my fried food. It really seems to work for me, but everyone is different. Growing up I ate like a horse and everyone would tell me I would regret it when I got older lol, should have listened I guess.
