Good post. As a former LEO myself, I've been there multiple times.

I've always appreciated the recognition that our nation's military gets - finally the attention and respect they deserve - but I wonder some days whether our police will ever be viewed in the same light. Most citizens have absolutely no idea what the job is, and the toll it takes on a person.

There was a time when parents taught their children to respect the police. Now the examples many of them see are their parent arguing with or badmouthing the police. The ones who are so ready to criticize would never have what it takes to take the oath and wear the badge and gun in public.

Thanks for doing what you do. There are those of us who get it, and appreciate it because we've lived it. And just remember that the sheep never appreciate the sheep dog until the wolves are near.

    John

First, thank you for your service!

You are under paid, under appreciated and over worked. A few bad apples (officers) are making it more difficult on all officers. The media focuses on the bad, therefore those who only watch "news" think that's how all officers are.

Not to compare what you do to what I do, but I sort of understand. I umpire baseball and from time to time get some coaches/parents that make me wonder why I continue. I do it because I love the game, definately not the money. I'm getting closer and closer to giving it up because my love is quickly being outweighed by the crap we have to put up with.

If you love your job, look for the few who praise you and really appreciate what you do.... I certainly appreciate the good officers who we rely on to keep us safe and help protect us from the bad guys.

        Chin up!!!

I spent 10 years as a military policeman in the Marine Corps and heard all the blah, blah, blah back then-usually from family members since the service member could get in serious trouble for it.

I was then part of the company that went into Iraq when Blackwater was kicked out for the infamous Nisoor Square incident.

I contracted for the Dept of State in their Ambassador Protection section for five years until a few months ago....can't tell you how many times I have been referred to and called a "Contract killer", "Mercenary", "Cash for bodies", etc, etc-and that is from US folks! Tons of other names from the Iraqi's. It got to the point where when I came home on my short vacations, I told people I worked as a cashier in a grocery store. Heck, my FaceBook page still says I work as a cashier at a Piggly Wiggly! Haha

Point is, no matter what people say, policemen are usually the first people called in times of crisis. Just like at home, the Iraqi's looked to us for help when we were on venues and something went really bad. You are always UNWANTED UNTIL YOU ARE NEEDED.

And that's just it. People don't realize the amount of restraint and professionalism that's required just to do your daily job.

I feel sorry for the guy. To have an attitude like that to not only feel that way but to actually vocalize it to another fellow human, you've got to have some serious anger issues that you're battling with daily. Kudos to you sir! Cooler heady ALWAYS prevail! I appreciate what you do. Have a blessed rest of the day!!!

From what I have seen on the tv show "Cops" there are a lot of disrespectful folks out there. It's because of LEO's like you, serving and protecting me and my family, that the closest I come to violence is by watching the television. Thank You LuBowhunter for being a LEO. GOD BLESS YOU

Don't sweat the jackasses, brother. If you'd jumped back at the guy, he'd be on the phone with Professional Standards (for the non-LEO's that's the new PC term for Internal Affairs these days) before you got back in your car. And he probably had his voice recorder running, hoping you'd take the bait and say or do something stupid. You did fine. Nothing you say is gonna change that guy's mind. He's an idiot. Write him off and don't give him a second thought. On the other hand, there's lots of people who "get" it and appreciate what you do.

I started my 28th year in LE this week.

...and the best revenge for people like that guy is to let them continue to live their miserable train-wreck lives.

The way the media portrays your profession I'm not sure why anyone would go into that line of work. The officer is ALWAYS the problem, God forbid they actually report that some punk did something wrong.
Your career is admirable and don't let the idiots among us discourage you from the good work you do.

I have had many folks tell me that my job is a wonderful SHAM job.
Lots of sitting around in the A/C. But what they don't do is appreciate that they get to sleep when I scrape up a dead mans head off a rock wall and put the pieces into a couple latex gloves.

"i dont care" is the same thing you say when you get fed up with stupidity on a continual basis, yet here you are, still caring. same thing. for that moment, the author of the letter is saying he has taken his badge off and doesnt care until he puts it back on, same as when a welder gets off work and doesnt want to weld or think about metallurgy.
