I ask that same question, in interviews.
I am interviewing mechanical designers, so the answer I'm looking for is welding, woodworking or something of that nature.
Simply because people that actually build stuff with their hands make better designers.

Honesty is best. If they don't hire you because you hunt - YOU DO NOT WANT TO WORK THERE ANYWAY...

Wildlife conservation is a different way of saying hunting. May be a little more palatable to those who are ignorant about hunting. I think it is important to consider that the interviewer may have a set of values and opinions which may or may not reflect the companies values or opinions but may effect their evaluation of you. During a job interview, you should remain in as neutral a position as possible on issues not directly related to the job your applying for. Consider that the interviewer may be trying to determine whether or not your hobbies may make you unavailable at predictable times of the the year i.e. hunting season. Suppose they don't have a problem with hunting, but have a problem being under staffed during hunting season because there are so many hunters already working there. It's easy to say "I don't want to work somewhere because ___fill in the blank___", but can be harder to find another job. Hard enough to get an interview these days.

If you answered it honestly, then you answered it perfectly.

Your worry about offending a non hunter is valid, but the folks who've said something akin to "you wouldn't want to be there, anyway" if they were anti's are exactly right.

Well I guess it wasn't an issue because they want me back for a second (final) interview tomorrow at 1PM.

When I hired people for retail several years ago I always wanted a truthful answer. I actually had an asst. mgr once that did not hunt at all and he would always work opening weekend by himself but he had a hugh family and wanted the day before and day after Christmas off so he always got it.

Was it a test?
You looked on line and found out the CEO likes to hunt.

Could they not have as easily Googled you?......

If you answered hunting, you likely won't be hired. I can hear the CEO now..........

"Sorry son but if you are a hunter, we can't hire you. The rest of us are and we are always gone around the opening of deer season and we needed someone that hates hunting to be there for those weekends".

Honestly, anytime I have asked that question in a interview it was simply to get a feel for a persons passions in life! I would much rather hire someone who has passion for the things they like/love rather than someone boring.
