Been doing it over 30 years. Some years are better than others. Don't forget about the standby hunts... better odds most of the time... just time consuming for a "chance"

Most folks seem to apply for the hunts in the best areas with the highest success rates. Doing this will give you 1000:1 odds. Apply for the places with lower success rates and you should get drawn at least every other year. Remember, the success rate is deer in the cooler; not sightings, shot opportunities, or even cripples. You would be surprised at the general public's lack of shooting skill, scent control, etc.

I too was drawn the first year I entered for GDE. I've got 19 pref. points now. I applied every year for Matagorda Island thinking my odds were a little better there cause you have to have a boat to get there. I ghuess theres plenty of deer hunters with boats down there cause I never get drawn. I thought the deer were big down there but I found out that a 120-130 is about as big as they get down there. I picked another place to try this year cause that would be a lot of trouble to have to run the boat across the bay in the winter with cold weather and low tide, for just an average deer.

The odds will be much worse with the new system of drawing any one particular hunt, since people are no longer restricted to applying for just one hunt in a category. My son failed to draw an alligator tag again this year. He's 15 and I've put him in every year since he was 8 (the minimum age). If he doesn't draw next year, he won't have another opportunity for the youth hunt, as he will be too old. We used to draw the adult alligator tags every 2-3 years. Then along came "Swamp People", and there are now 10 times the number of people applying.
