#3 Its a ton of fun. And work.

I imagine its hard to trap yote's in a cage, but maybe wire your hog trap door open and start using it as a place to dump guts and food scraps.

Then when you are there on weekends, undo the wire so its 'triggered' open and can possibly catch some predators in there that have gotten use to the easy meal.
#4 if you bait a hog trap with a dead chicken or something similar, you will probably catch a pig before you will catch a yote IMO.

best bet for this season is to try and hunt them while on stand until you can get an experienced trapper out there to help snare them. your deer hunting might be slightly affected again this season, but it sounds like it has been anyway.

snares are extremely effective if you find a good trapper. but commercial harvest opens November 1 and you stand a good chance at getting someone out there at no cost. depending on the place, he may be able to setup snares that won't impact your hunting areas.

I agree with the above, If you cant get out there to try and trap yourself. I would look for someone in the are and let them trap for you...

I think you will have a hard time trying to catch a yote in a cage trap unless its really really hungry or a city yote.

Just fyi coyotes are smart and trapping them requires some knowledge, work, and TIME. i thought this same thing and worked my tail off checking trap lines daily. its not as easy as u think its gonna be. buy quality traps and lures! check out trapping forums like trapperman.com. Its the TBH of trapping. also youtube has tons of videos on how to create different sets. U needs lots of traps too. a lot of trappers will run 100-300 traps at once and check them daily. I saw a study that showed u must remove around 70% of ur coyote pop in order to help the predation of deer. makes sense if u think that 2 coyotes turn into 8 real quick after one litter of pups. Good luck.

I'm going to assume that at least 99% of the people on this site stay current on getting their hunting licenses, but technically you don't have to have one to kill coyotes or hogs if you are removing them because of depredation.

i had a friend come out and trap for me three years ago and I was amazed at the amount of intricate detail he put into setting those traps. his approach into the area was very much like a typical bowhunter controlling his scent etc.... we put four leg hold snares out on my fence line next to my house and in four days, we caught several coons and four yotes.

it was actually very cool to see!

Please don't use a wire snare. Especially if you haven't done this before. You don't want to snare a deer. It will die. I would recommend leg traps. You can get a bottled bait that works great. It only takes a few drops. I get mine from gander mountain. I don't recall the name of it, but just ask for predator lures/ baits. To avoid buzzards. Dig a small hole at an angle in the ground, then place a log or limbs over the top. This will keep buzzards at bay. Once you have the bait in place put about three leg traps around the perimeter of the hole. They have to be covered, again you need to know how to set the leg trap. I have caught several using a leg trap set up like this. You won't catch as many buzzards either. If you simply hang a chicken in the air with leg traps under it you may catch a Yote, but you will catch possums and coons. With snares you can't control what gets caught. If you use a leg trap a deer can still get out of it.

K so educate me on a leg trap vs a snare? I know my buddy bought some wire snares ones for hogs, and they have some kinda special release for deer? Not sure the difference I thought a leg trap was the spring loaded ones with teeth?

I use snares for hogs all the time. Mine have a deer stop on them. If you use snares this is a must. The snare will only tighten enough to catch a hog or Yote, but a deer will be able gets its leg out. If you hang a snare over a trail you risk catching a deer by the head or neck. It's not worth losing a deer and feeding the Yotes!! Go with leg traps!!!!

Found this ^^^ on the Internet. Perfect example why you don't put snares in the air over trails

You don't need leg traps with teeth to catch a Yote. The straight ones work fine. They can't pull their foot out

So a deer could pull his leg out but a yote couldn't???? And if the trap slammed shut on a deer's leg wouldn't it break it????

If you set up they way I posted earlier a deer won't get in it at all. They won't try to dig out bait. A predator will. I've never caught a deer in a leg trap and I've been doing this 30 years

To answer your question yes a deer can pull its leg out and a Yote can't. Because of the shape of their foot
