So I know coyotes can really put a hurting on the fawn crop and even take down mature bucks. Shot one last year was a group of 4 chasing a Big buck and a doe. Probably cost me a shot at the buck lol. Anyways is it legal to trap them in a live trap, and kill them to try and get rid of them? Got a bunch showing up on my game cameras like their trying to ambush my deer. Can I set snares? Or does this require a trappers license?

Before you start setting any snares or leg hold traps, get some learning material, you can find quite a bit on the internet, also get a couple of how to books. Go texastrappers.com or look up Texas trappers association, and try to get some help. Your going to educate some coyotes along the way, it will be in your best interest to maximize your learning and minimize it for the coyotes, you REALLY don't want to have to deal with anymore educated animals than what you have to.

Ya I wouldn't put out Poision, I even hate the snare idea because I don't get up there to check on it all the time maybe 2-3 weeks before I'm able to make it again. I have a single/double hog trap I built with handles and wheels on it I was thinking of using and setting on weekends I'm going to be there. Don't like the idea of making any animal suffer if I don't have too. Passed up several shots on deer because of this, I like to make them drop in their tracks if possible.

If you are going to trap:
#1 Listen to Tuffbroadhead (and the other experts like Yanta and Fergeris) and read some of their threads, including the 'Official Trapping Thread'
#2 Don't let the animal suffer. If you can't get back to check a trap the morning after you set it, just don't bother setting it.
#3 Its a ton of fun. And work.
I imagine its hard to trap yote's in a cage, but maybe wire your hog trap door open and start using it as a place to dump guts and food scraps.
Then when you are there on weekends, undo the wire so its 'triggered' open and can possibly catch some predators in there that have gotten use to the easy meal.Last edited by Patton; 08-06-2014, 11:23 AM.
